Raising Top Speed in RM

Recommended Posts

What happens if you turn off 'Use Scale Speeds'?

.

To turn off scale speeds, refer to RM manual version 1.63 page 17. On the graphic on that page you will see a 'check box' for use scale speeds in the bottom right quadrant. Un check it.

.

If the loco goes faster, at least that will prove that it is capable of going faster. Then it is just a case of finding to right decoder CV to change, when 'use scale speeds' is re-enabled.

Whenever you set up a loco in RM and it is a loco in the RM database, RM will limit its speed to the maximum scale speed for that loco type.  You can make it go faster by switching off the Scale Speed feature as Chris says, but it will be unrealistically fast (your choice though).

And you you might also note for the future that RM doesn't do its speed limitations by changing CVs in the 8249 but in the program itself.

Quite right Fishy....had forgotten about that. Had RF had an Elite rather than an eLink he would probably been able to turn the speed up higher on that. As you quite rightly say, it is RM that is imposing 'scale speeds'. My memory grey cells obviously need a bit of lubrication.

I have been trying to raise the top speed of the loco but failed.

Rugbyfan,

As well as turning off 'scale speeds' just purely temporarily as a diagnostic check. It would be helpful if you were to describe what actions you have taken to raise the speed within RM. There may be things that you can do that you have not tried yet. Like in 'loco settings' window for example.

Regardless of scale speeds being set in RM, which is likely to be the cullprit, a basic decoder reset Cv8 to value 8 would put things on a normal datum level such that an Elite, Select or other 'manual' controller would be able to run the loco at its real max chat.

Failing that try reading in RM the CV for Vmax (can't remember which it is) to see if it is set at less than 255 - if the decoder and controller allows it of course.
