LCDR
It was the Tri-ang Princess Royal class version that replaced the black Princess Elizabeth with simplified valve gear. At first the Princess Elizabeth model was available either in black with simple valve gear (connecting rods only) or in green with representation of Waelscherts valve gear. They were both sold as 46201. Then about 1959 a maroon version was introduced with full valve gear as 46200 Princess Royal, and the black one was renamed 46205 Princess Victoria. Although a short underscale model it was a general favourite with Tri-ang users for many years.
Huwsie
Do you have a picture you can share? I've acquired some Hornby Dublo (three-rail) stock in recent years, and some of that has certainly stood the test of time. It all looks great, and for the most, even still runs really well, so much so that I'm now considering a dedicated three-rail layout, on which I'll put the sort of scenery that would have been available and appropriate for that period of modelling.I hope the plan I've got for eternal life works.. going to need it for all my model train plans! When my Dad bought me that first Triang set, he certainly 'set the barn on fire' there! - still burning 47 years later.

Tony57
Hi DavidJust wondering which version have you got the Black or Green or Maroon with early crest on tender or Black late crest on tender?Early crest on tender ok for series 6 (modern track) Late crest the wheels will have large flanges more suitable for series 4 track (old) unless they have been changed or chassis swopped. LCDR
There are two designs of ownership emblem used on BR steam locomotives. 1949 - 1957 (Early emblem) a yellow lion astride a red wheel standing on a white edged box containing the words 'BRITISH RAILWAYS'.in white. There were no carriage versions and EMU / DMUs used the locomotive emblem only on the powered cars. 1957 to 1966 (late crest) a red lion rising from a golden crown holding in its paws a silver wheel, all enclosed in a gold circle. The gold circle has horizontal gold edged wings containing the word 'BRITISH' to the left and 'RAILWAYS' to the right. For carriages the same device omitted the word wings and the words were enclosed in an outer (doubled) gold ring instead. Tri-ang locomotives had these as transfers. However early models of the PRINCESS had the early emblem on the tender heat embossed into the plastic and infilled with gold paint instead. The Trackmaster clockwork 0-6-2T and early 'Jinties' had the words BRITISH RAILWAYS in white on the tank sides instead of the emblem.

The son of Triangman
David, the loco bogie wheels date your model nicely and the lined tender does as well, your model dates from the time period 1959 -1962. To find one with good linning is very rare now as it was a transfer on the tender and degrades with age.
The son of Triangman
Interestingly the old heat embossing was re-introduced in 1972-74. During that period Princess Victoria was re-issued as a last "fling" for the model and was issued unlined with heat embossed gold BR lion riding wheel retro style. In 1974 The loco was available in BR Black, BR Green, Maroon(Mail order set) and the ultra rare BR Experimental "Caledonian" Blue.
Ruffnut Thorston
The last ones, 1974. The tender crest was printed, not heat embossed printed (Like branding, it melts the image into the plastic. The name "Hornby" is moulded under the running plate, instead of Tri-ang or Tri-ang Hornby. Some have the "Exhaust Steam Sound" box in the tender. Made in Black, for Train sets and "Solo" boxed sales. Green. Mainly Train Sets for Mail Order Companies. Some had full valve gear. Maroon with the printed BR crest and BR number 46205 (Not LMS).Train Sets for Mail Order Companies. Some had full valve gear. The blue ones are very rare.... In 1959, the Princess Victoria had the transfers on the tender as two parts. The lining was sepearate from the late crest transfer. Later models have the lining and crest as one big transfer, including the "black" inside the lining. The driving wheels were changed in 1960-1961 for sintered iron solid castings wihout the see through spokes. In 1962, the last year, the safety valves were changed to the later pattern, without the two "ridges". From the cast driving wheels on yours, 1960-1961, unless the safety valves have "Smooth" stems? Then 1962. Regards Sarah
