Pete172
Dear all,I bought a new (split from a mixed freight box set) class 08 shunter DCC fitted, at a model show. The model does not run at all well, it stutters and makes a loud grinding noise. I opened it up tonight and it seems perfect inside with no signs of previous use - just like new.I tried to download a service sheet from Hornby, but when I type Class 08 into the search field it brings up nothing. If I type in 08 shunter it only brings up the sheet for replacement pickups. The only R number I can see, is inside the plastic body which is stamped R156, which the search field also does not find. Why can't I find a service sheet ? Which model of decoder is inside ? .I have already cleaned wheels & pickups with IPA, so any suggestions are welcome ! Thanks,Peter

NormanQ4
Hi PeteThe decoder is probably the standard Hornby R8249
Rog RJ
I'm pretty sure you need service sheet 291 https://www.hornby.com/uk-en/downloads/view/download/item/63 These models use a 4 pin decoder X9659. It's the same as an R8249 decoder but only has 4 wires and a 4 pin plug.
NormanQ4
Hi RogI'm curious to know how you know that, since Hornby don't make it easy to find that information with their search feature.Do you have the hard copy service sheet that came with a Class 08? 96RAF
If you persevere with a class 08 search you get service sheet 278 for a class 08 loco covering a wide range of R numbers.compare your innards with those on this sheet which shows an 8pin decoder blanking plate.you could also try searching eBay for the mixed freight set to determine the R number. walkingthedog
Hi RogI'm curious to know how you know that, since Hornby don't make it easy to find that information with their search feature.Do you have the hard copy service sheet that came with a Class 08?It's got all the details on sheet 291. The sheet serves most DCC 0-6-0 locos Which is probably why it doesn't mention the CL08 in its title. Just a matter of browsing the sheets. Pete172
Hi ,I think Rog was right, I downloaded service sheet 291 https://www.hornby.com/uk-en/downloads/view/download/item/63 , and this seems to be a good match, except that my model does not seem to have traction tyres & centre axle springs........mine must be very basic indeed . Sheet 278 is for the proper DCC version.I gave the chassis another run, it seems a bit smoother after I cleaned the wheel backs & pickups, but that peppercorn grinder noise is still there, especially in reverse ........blowed if I can see anything wrong with it though, I think the noise is coming from the motor, so I may have to take it out to test it on it's own. Thanks,Peter
Rog RJ
The centre axle doesn't have springs but one of the outer axles may have.
2e0dtoeric
All new loco's need running in! Give it half an hour in each direction, at moderate speed and NO load, and it should quieten down.
Fishmanoz
I happen to own the Mixed Freight set and, as far as I can see, there is no service sheet (there are no R numbers for the locos, only the set, and no service sheet shows anywhere I can see against the set). The chassis in both the 08 and the 0-6-0T J83 that come in the set are exactly the same. The motor is a Type M. The chassis is very basic and none of the axles are sprung. Pickups are on front and rear wheels only and the chassis is problematic on points, one of mine being far worse than the other. The decoder is an X5659, which is 4-pin as said above and is a direct plug type. While this may be similar in specification to the R8249, it is not the same as different components, PCB and board layout are used. Type M should be sufficient for someone to give Pete the part number for the motor. The operating and maintenance instruction sheet has no part number details and shows only lubrication details and how to remove the motor by removing the mounting screw at one end. There are no drive train details. The decoder and its mounting bracket don't show either.
Pete172
Hi Fishy, / All.I removed the motor tonight, ran it & noticed a clicking sound from the brushes end. I examined it with my magnifying goggles on but can't see anything touching anything as the motor turns. I lubricated the bushes at both ends, cleaned the wheel backs, tyres and the pickups and put the body back on, but the grinding noise is still there. My model has 3 pickups each side of the motor unlike the motor shown in sheet 291 which has only 2. I wonder if there is a fault with the motor that causes extra vibration that is being amplified when the body shell is in place ?Most annoying as this is actually a nice looking still new loco, and I don't like to be beaten !
