david_denham
thinking getting one of these love the look. Just thought I would ask your thoughts on this locothanks Dave
VESPA
Pass it by and get the new Schools version. If Stowe is the loco you want then source a suitable model and get it renamed and numbered. Easy to do with Modelmasters identity change packs.
LCDR
Big problem with early Schools 'Stowe' model is it is tender drive so now an obsolete type, even the latest Railroad 'Schools' has loco drive. However I have half a dozen of these older ones and they are not bad for their age. The driving wheels will occasionally stick and skid, which looks odd as the tender pushes it along. This is caused by misalignment of the rods and can be fixed with gentle adjustment and lubrication. To be pedantic the dimensions are slightly wrong, to allow the same frame to be used for the 'Hunt' as well. Compared to the Dapol kit and the latest Hornby models the curve of the front footplate and the smoke deflectors is incorrect. This only came to light when I was fitting some etched brass smoke deflectors. I ended up making new deflectors out of brass sheet and wire! LCDR
It is hard to be precise, the new Railroad Schools are good basic model but using the 1981 body moulding, and valve gear, but now loco drive however, example - R3158.The 2008 super detail model is also excellent but that bit more expensive. lots of different examples including R3208 & R3311 which are current production. There are also different liveries to choose from, it is a matter of your choice which one you go for. The Liverpool shop has a good selection of new and pre-owned in a good selection of these.
