Mike Grant
I'm not usually into what-ifs, but I came across Clavework Graphics' collection of fantasy racing aircraft recently and was immediately struck by the BAe Hawk in Mansell colours (http://www.clavework-graphics.co.uk/aircraft/fantasy_racing_teams/fantasy_FR017.html)I adapted the scheme to the Hawk 100 as the longer nose looked pure F1 to me. The kit was built straight out the box and went together beautifully, the only issue being that I found the canopy to be a bit too wide for the cockpit. Next time I build one of these I'll try Jonathan's technique of flowing white into the MDC cord:- https://www.airfix.com/uk-en/forum/172-airfix-hawks-made-easy/?p=1The various logos were downloaded and printed onto decal paper using an ALPS printer. Base is a block of acrylic sprayed matt black with the chequered flag masked and sprayed gloss.http://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Migrant/0nlineFinishedNew/BAeHawk_Mansell/1000px/BAeHawkNM_1000_05_zpsen86yybd.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Migrant/0nlineFinishedNew/BAeHawk_Mansell/1000px/BAeHawkNM_1000_02_zpskeeqpuxf.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Migrant/0nlineFinishedNew/BAeHawk_Mansell/1000px/BAeHawkNM_1000_03_zps6o3b093l.jpghttp://img.photobucket.com/albums/1003/Migrant/0nlineFinishedNew/BAeHawk_Mansell/1000px/BAeHawkNM_1000_01_zpsfwpeqzzb.jpg

paul-muc
How do you get those sharp lines between two colours? I have several "Unfinisheds" with the paint either crept under the tape or torn off when removing the tape. Even Maskol took some paint with it. Mike Grant
Thanks guys! How do you get those sharp lines between two colours? I have several "Unfinisheds" with the paint either crept under the tape or torn off when removing the tape. Even Maskol took some paint with it.It's all masked with Tamiya tape, Paul. I've yet to find anything better for straight lines.
peebeep
Mike, did you get the idea from Clavework Graphics, or they from you? I'd like somebody to have a go at the Rothmans Lightning or the Gold Leaf Typhoon!
Mike Grant
@Paul BrownPaul, I got the idea from Claveworks. There are a whole bunch of profiles of spurious racing aircraft on the site, definitely worth a look.

Harold Smith
That's gorgeous! Would you mind if I linked a pic of it on the What If and Beyond The Sprues forums? (full credit and link to here, of course). Claveworks is well known and respected there.

Harold Smith
Okay thanks - done! Thread on What If: http://www.whatifmodelers.com/index.php/topic,34465.msg714707.html#new (ask if you have trouble getting on there: having some tech issues ATM) Thread on Beyond The Sprues: http://beyondthesprues.com/Forum/index.php?topic=1902.new#new I've also PM'd Clave on What If to let him know about your model. Can't guarantee he'll respond though, since he doesn't go on there as much as he used to. There's a whole sub-genre of What-Ifs based around racing colours, often using aftermarket decals intended for slot-racing cars. Most are credible Reno-Racer style modified WWII fighters that just didn't happen to be used in real life, but you do get wilder ones, and even comedy things like racing tanks.
