Replacing Pullman couplings

Has anyone else wondered why the couplings on Pullman carriages (the ones with lights on tables inside) are so small? Fair enough if they are high-detail but ultimately they have to be attached to Locos with 'conventional' size couplings & thus a mis-match. I've had occasions where the loco and the Pullman carriages have dis-connected and it's a job trying to get them back mutually connected as the carriages' couplings are pointed to one side after coming out of a bend for example & have to be straightened before attempting to re-couple.

Is there a quick way to replace the carriage couplings for 'standard' (large) ones?

thanks as always

Hi 70s, are your locos fairly old. Most rolling stock apart from some of the Railroad range have small couplings as do the products from the other producers of UK model railways. I haven't got the coaches but I would expect the couplings to plug into the coach. If they can be pulled out you will be able to buy larger couplings that will plug in from the Hornby shop.

Thanks guys. I've just the three locomotives, a new TTS Flying Scotsman plus a nearly new Mallard and a GWR Pannier 0-6-0. Some of my carriages are I'd say older and these have the larger couplings. I'll take a look at how they're attached and order myself replacements that will have them all alike.

Thanks as ever for the advice, really appreciate it.

You don't need your coaches to be old to have this problem. I have the brand new Winston Churchioll train pack and the luggage van has the old type wide coupling while the rest loco and Pullmans) have the small type (something that their Imperial Airways pack suffered from also).

If your Pullmans are of the newer types with NEM pockets canging the couplings is simple as they just plug and unplug. However, there are a few of the earlier Pullmans (with lights) that had screw on couplings which may make things trickier.

As I have the several items of stock with moulded on couplings, I've opted to change all my stock with narrow nem socketed couplings to the wide or medium type. The exceptions being some fixed formations where I have only changed one end of the end vehicles.
