Fazy Posted December 27, 2015 Posted December 27, 2015 Thought I would treat myself to a Brit. Now just wondering whats the difference between the Super detail model and the new super super Detailed models of today. Apart from being DCC ready. I am planning on changing her to Morning Star as she did pass though Leicester and looks to have the right tender and deflators for this. Also probably get some comet super detail parts well I'm at it
Fazy Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 Forgot the "t" Flying Dutchman should be
2e0dtoeric Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Deflators?? Are they nails for sticking into tyres? I presume you mean deflectors! :-)The difference between super detail and super super detail - probably more tiny fragile bits to snap off every time you touch the model! If you quoted the R numbers, we'd know which particular models you are referring to!
Fazy Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 It's at the top of the page! R2387I have bought it from eBay but its not arrived yet but its the older type of box with a picture of the model and super detail written to one side on it.
VESPA Posted December 28, 2015 Posted December 28, 2015 Thought I would treat myself to a Brit. Now just wondering whats the difference between the Super detail model and the new super super Detailed models of today? Apart from being DCC ready. I am planning on changing her to Morning Star as she did pass though Leicester and looks to have the right tender and deflators for this. Also probably get some comet super detail parts well I'm at itDid any other brits go on the MML? possible with the bigger tender as they are quite nice looking locomotives Fazy, have a look at this website and you can see your donor loco and the one you wish to convert to. The later Brits from Hornby a the best bet, but I have well in the 20's of them and the earlier super detail ones are very good. Earlier than that and swopping the front bogies and adding detail parts from the new Brit makes all the difference. So the link..... http://www.davidheyscollection.com/page90.htm and also the following pages 91 & 92. You will see other photos of Brits on here and a couple are mine.
Fazy Posted December 28, 2015 Author Posted December 28, 2015 Thank you Vespa I may be some time reading that website but from what I read so far seems most informative and plenty of photos.I guest that the newest would be best but I'm a tight git and for £50 I can't complain. Plus I get to do some modeling. What I was thinking was using the old comet parts and possibly some parts from Hornby newer models to bring it up to today's standard. I could see my self buying a few more. One thing am I right that the motor in the engine?
VESPA Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 The loco you have ordered is tender drive BUT it is the later super detailed version and the detailed parts should be with it. You will get front steps, and the AWS protector with vac pipes. This is the inbetween version and not the latest version. For £50 it is a good buy as long as it is in good working condition. You can get the loco ID change pack from Modelmaster but I used their blanking green transfer and HMRS number. I found the latter numbers were almost exactly as the Hornby ones. The nameplates I use are Modelmasters. You may need GW colour code dot for the cab as I think, from memory, Morning Star had this. You will soon see that nearly all the Brits had some kind of mod that others didn't have. One of the biggest problems are the tender crests and what kind of smoke deflectors were fitted. You will also see that tender bearings can vary as can the tenders. 70034 Thomas Hardy was later fitted to a tender from one of the last in the class (high sided). I could go on but you need to study the actual donor loco and the loco it is to be in real life.
VESPA Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Update..... your donor loco will suit Morning Star perfectly. It was not fitted with Swindon smoke deflectors until sometime later and the handrail deflectors were on the loco in early and late crest periods. It was not fitted with AWS so no need to fit the protector plate. It was however fitted with a speedometer. These were not on Hornby's mid period Brits only on the latest as appropriate. They can be added with good detail parts from I think Comet.
Fazy Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 Cheers vespa. I am currently trying to track down the number of a second brit. Which was actually sheded at Leicester. For about a week in 1964 before it was nicked by ansely, well swapped for a clapped out scot! Just got to find the mag with information in. It's Later then I normally model but it is a good excuse.
Fazy Posted December 29, 2015 Author Posted December 29, 2015 That website is super after reading up on morning star 70021 she was at Trafford Park at the time of the photo (1958) I have in a book. Also at Trafford at the same time were 70004 70014 70015 70017 & 70042 which is rather nice collection wouldn't you say.
VESPA Posted December 30, 2015 Posted December 30, 2015 I think my Brit collection is from the Ian Allan combined volume. Just the numbers70000 black,70000 Royal Train,70000, BR green, 70004,70006,70008,70010,70012,70013,70016,70018,70019,70023,70025,70030,70035,70036,70037,70038,70040,70042,70043,70044,70045,70046,70048,70050,70052,70054. I can honestly say that I am bonkers! Several are renumbered and named from carefully selected donor models. The question is, do I splash out for the two announced for this year at the new exhorbitant prices.(70001 & 70034) The real loco cost around £23,000 new and the next due Hornby ones are getting closer to that amount! Arghhhhhh!! Dr the straight jacket please.
Fazy Posted December 30, 2015 Author Posted December 30, 2015 I noticed the new numbers announced by Hornby you don't have! So apart from the damage to the wallet what harm could possibly happen. Mind I am tempted with another brit western star which could become 70014 Iron Duke
Fazy Posted January 2, 2016 Author Posted January 2, 2016 Thought vespa my like this photo from one of my negatives./media/tinymce_upload/6438ff25224d46c4d17226bab413dfa7.png
VESPA Posted January 4, 2016 Posted January 4, 2016 Morning Star and Solway Firth. What is the one behind Morning Star? (if you can remember). If you are going for 70014 Iron Duke are you planning to have Golden Arrow plates as well. If so I know where there is a William Shakespeare for sale. PM me through Model Rail Forums.
Fazy Posted January 4, 2016 Author Posted January 4, 2016 Hi Vespa I brought the negative from eBay. Too young to have been able to take any photos of BR steam being born in 1971. They say I have the copyright but reading up on copyright laws that is a very complicated thing to be sure of. It is a colour photograph but needs to be put through a computer program to reduce the greening. I went though a period of buying Negatives but might let them go to a better home. Can't afford to collect both negatives and models. Of the top of my head I can't remember where the Golden Arrow ran. Did it go through Leicester.
Fazy Posted January 4, 2016 Author Posted January 4, 2016 Well shes turned up and all seems ok needs new traction tiers. /media/tinymce_upload/5d07a43d9b39e484460a2678c934d435.jpg
Fazy Posted January 4, 2016 Author Posted January 4, 2016 Stupid boy the Golden Arrow definitely did not go through Leicester I'll go and stand in the corner!
