here is RailModeller rendition of my 6yr olds track sketch, this is our first attempt at a board based track on 8x6 ply.we have a problem where we cant seem to connect the track by the software, i presume when the track is on the board we can jiggle and move the track into its correct allinment?

No don't try and force it.

It seems too far out for that. This is where the quarter and shorter straights come in handy. To align yours a few adjustments would be needed.

C8200 & C8236 are 87mm and 78mm respectively and with that 9mm difference you will find inserting one of each in sections of track parrallel to each other (or just one) can close those smaller gaps. For example replacing the single full straight above the gap with a half and a perhaps a C8236 would close the horizontal gap without need for the red quarter straight. The the vertical alighnment needs to be adjusted in a similar way by having a short and a quarter inserted opersite each other to move one part vertically 9mm more than the other. It might then be close enough to close off.
