WHITE GREASE

LCDR

Recommended Posts

I have recently got out of storage a Hornby B12/3 from set R1032.

I tried to run it but it did not respond to the controller so I took the body off to inspect it. I tried to put the power directly to the motor and was rewarded with a buzz but no movement. I then started to dismantle the chassis and removing the motor which then ran perfectly out of the chassis. I found one of the pick-up leads had become unsoldered, which was easy to fix, BUT I also found that the wheels wouldn't turn easily. In fact they were so stiff I had to use a fair amount of force to turn them.

I found that the gear and axles were liberally coated with white grease, but it had solidified, and was acting like glue not lubricant.  Now I do NOT use white grease, so it must have been there from manufacture.

A bit of  cleaning and fresh model loco oil soon got the wheels turning again, but I have not encountered this phemonenon before, so thought I would share the experience.
