John Irwing Posted January 11, 2016 Posted January 11, 2016 Airfix 1:48 English Electric Lightning F6 (A09178) finished as Lightning F.53 53-692/L of the Royal Saudi Air Force based at Tabuk AB 1977.Decals from Model Alliance sheet MA-48170, built mainly OOB except some Tamiya tape belts, brush painted with Humbrol Enamels mainly Hu84 and Hu29.A short lived experimental scheme which apparently had a noticeable detrimental effect on performance. Two schemes were trailed, this wrap around one, and a similar one with sky coloured lower surfaces http://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah51/johnirwing/12_zpswbcigapc.jpghttp://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah51/johnirwing/13_zpsqzmy0fxa.jpghttp://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah51/johnirwing/17_zpsqb1ejxcm.jpghttp://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah51/johnirwing/15_zpsgry3ssps.jpghttp://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah51/johnirwing/11_zps635psb59.jpghttp://i1377.photobucket.com/albums/ah51/johnirwing/18_zpsjnbfimln.jpg
Drewe Manton Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 I was always under the imprerssion that they never actually flew in those schemes, but I appear to be wrong. Wonder how detrimental applying camo to the RAF's fleet was over the bare metal ones?

Wonder how detrimental applying camo to the RAF's fleet was over the bare metal ones? I understand it was a mat paint and flying in a hot climate may have had a contributing effect. There is is a build of the camo/sky version in an early copy of Airfix Model World.
david_fleming Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 There are flying pictures in Tim McLelland's Lightning book
Mike Grant Posted January 12, 2016 Posted January 12, 2016 Very nice, gives the Lightning a whole different look. I want to do this scheme in 1/72.
