You have kept this very quiet Hornby!

The February edition of the Hornby magazine carries a review of a new product that even the Engine Shed has kept quiet about. Drax power station has commissioned two models of their huge bogie hopper wagons for carrying Biomass fuel which will be released later this month! These wagons will be limited editions of 1000 each . Having observed the real thing on my way home at lunchtime today and arriving to find the magazine waiting for me I was mightily impressed at how realistic these look. I predict that they will sell like hot cakes to modellers of the contemporary scene. Also a class 60 in Drax livery is likely as well.

Oh, and the J50 gets a good write up too!

They look a fantastic model and would love to owns some of them, but I have a feeling they will be over £50 each.  By the time I have saved up they will of all gone.

These Drax Biomass hoppers are something I've been asking Hornby to do ever since they came out in the real world. I'm so glad that they've been finally announced as a Drax Power Station comission. I want atleast 6-8 of them to make a short train...

I sadly am not a subscriber of the magazine as I rather save my pennies for the models. So I have no info on how much they cost or from where they can be purchased. I hope that limited editon isn't just a one-time thing. The tooling can obviously be used more.

If Hornby own the tooling I'm sure we'll see more re-runs later. I sincerely hope that's the case as I am afraid I may not be able to buy some right now.

More info on this would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

JBM.

PS: I urge the OP to change the thread title to something more inviting and to the topic. I very nearly posted about the same thing. Luckily I scrolled down and found this odd title and decided it was worth a look. Drax commissions Hornby to produce Biomass Hoppers will be apt.

I thought the title was very good. If it had mentioned the wagons I wouldn't have looked. Nice one LC.

No prices mentioned yet, pretty expensive I reckon considering that some small Presflo wagons are now selling for £25, so at least £50+ would be my guess.

I think that my purchasing days are very very limited now as I don't think that any of the wagons and coaches are worth the money being asked. If these are over £50 then the ltd amount of 1000 will be about right as most will be unable to justify the cost. Locos are also getting nearer the cost of the real thing! It's no wonder China is in a flap and stocks and shares are plummeting.

We are probably going off topic but LC&DR always has superb input and knowledge in his posts. I love reading them and gain knowledge about railways that interests me. Luckily this is free!!!!

This seems to be a commission from Drax and they've asked Hornby to do it. So Drax could've simply requested Hornby to keep the covers on until last minute. Hence why no prior news about that.

Lastly a DB Schenker/Drax Class 60 has already been announced.

Looks like Slornie already beat me to the posting. Anyway I am waiting to see what those Hornby bashers will say about this price. Hornby prices look like a bargain infront of this. 83 bucks a pop is just too much. I was hoping to buy a rake of 6-8.

It has been confirmed that this is just a one time thing. IMO that's a bit of a waste. I'd be extremely happy if Hornby bought off the tooling from Drax (who own it) and re-issue it at a sensible price. A limited edition of 2000 I do not see selling at that price. at 40-50 quid they would have flown off the shelves.

Me too, but then a J50 fits in with my collection better, the Bio-mass wagon doesn't. They are a handsome wagon all the same, I see the real things every day, they ARE impressive.

I think Hornby prices look like a bargain against lots of products JBM. Like I said earlier, £25 for a Presflo wagon. Ridiculous. Can't see the reason for it, I've got 9 of the same companies Blue Circle versions and the were about 8 quid each.

Why spend all that money on producing these wagons and then only make 2000 of them.  I can only hope that another run of them with be done with different running numbers later and hopefully at a lower price.  I would of paid about £50.00 for one but not £83.00.

I don't understand how some manufaturers can produce items at what looks like good value compared to these wagons, take the APT-E 4 items, 2 motors. lights everywhere and sound for £325.00 plus a book all about it. That is less than the price of 4 of the wagons.

I hope Hornby are allowed to buy off the tooling that is owned by Drax. I'm sure if Hornby release the wagon as part of their own range it would be roughly £50 a piece. Sadly this entire situation falls intp Drax's hands. They wanted a limited run, they wanted to price it such and they commissioned Hornby to do so.

I feel these wagons have potential and as many said the level of detail is stunning, I hope Drax knows the value of tooling and allow Hornby to use it later.

@WTD

The prices of a certain competitors items have been skyrocketing. Not only the Presflo wagons but just have a look at the N gauge triple pack tankers and polybulk wagons. Just a year or so ago everyone was at Hornby's throat for high prices, not seeing much flak towards these though. Add to that Hornby offer free servicing, free shipping above certain prices etc. Hornby is clearly a winner here.

Quite so, chaps.  Doesn't matter what a company does, there will always be detractors.....if Hornby gave the wagons away, somebody would find fault!
