james_nelmes Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 I recently bought a non-powered Class 90 with the aim of powering it. I went to the Service Sheet (359c) and the quality of information was poor. The motor is not identified (although a reasonable amount of research and subsequent installation shows it's a x6122. The two smaller gears (x6281) should sit on axles which are not shown. The drive wheels have a gearwheel on their axle which is not shown. The pickups on the non-powered bogie are not shown or part numbers listed, which are a fundamental part of the drive mechanism. This makes it difficult to maintain locomotives and combined with a shortage of spares for a number of loco's (the complete drive unit for this locomotive is listed but unavailable at any of the various spares websites). The older service sheets were always of a high quality and made maintenance of locomotives a resonably easier task. I would ask that some of these issues are addressed and where possible the flow of spare parts is addressed.
96RAF Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 If you can find one then the easy way is to look for the drive unit complete X7274
Tony57 Posted January 25, 2016 Posted January 25, 2016 HiHaving just printed a copy of service sheet 359c it is a poor drawing compaired to others I have looked at.It does not show any thing to show there are wipers on the rear non powered bogie. Maybe Admin could bring it to engine sheds attention
trainlover23 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 Try looking at the following Service Sheet No.273E it has all you need
Tony57 Posted January 26, 2016 Posted January 26, 2016 HiSorry Trainlover23 , wrong loco, the service sheet you referred to is for a china made 5 pole ringfield motored unit, the one james was refering to is the can motor unit a totally different layout. (My Class 90 is an even earlier verson with working pantograph with a 3 pole UK made ringfield)

walkingthedog Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 He states that the gears fit on the axles, Ringfield gears are moulders to the wheels.
Tony57 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 Hi JamesHad a look on the bay, Peter's spares have a complete rear bogie unit, wheels and frame with out any signs of wires coming from any wipers. He also has a set of wheels for the power bogie which have the gears on the axel already, it appears that gear set X6281 are the ones that transferes the drive from the worm to the axels which may slide on to pins on the left had side of the motor side frames.Info based on the assumption you have a R2955 R3077 R3053 R3139 or R3350
trainlover23 Posted January 27, 2016 Posted January 27, 2016 He states that the gears fit on the axles, Ringfield gears are moulders to the wheels. It is difficult to understand exactly what he means
james_nelmes Posted January 28, 2016 Author Posted January 28, 2016 It's definately Service Sheet 359c - The motor drives two small cogs sat in line with the worm gears on either end of the motor. These gears then drive axle mounted gears where the gear is right in the middle of the axle. Its these gears that are not shown. I know the motor is a x6122 which is a skew wound 5 pole with a worm gear at either end.
