Agent .25i Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Ah ha!I've been trying to find out about this. Perhaps you'll know, Ratch. I'm racking my brain. What's up with airfix's 172/176. Do they make special one off aircraft for the 176 dioramas? For instance, the A50015 RAF Battle of Britain Airfield 1:76... Did airfix make a whole set of 176 figures, that look just like the 172 set, and a 176 spitfire and the fuelers are 176? Or is it a mash of 172 and 176 together? Or are the figures 176 and match other 176 vehicle sets like the AEC matador/5.5? I've read mixed reviews and a lot of hearsay regarding this in various forums... But based on this post here and the sheer volume of Airfix kits you churn out, I figure you may be the best source for a definitive answer. Thanks!
nmcabecadas Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Aircrafts are always 1/72, figures 1/76 are from the standard sets. There are vehicles in 1/76 and a few recent in 1/72, as the WWII RAF Vehicle Set or the Bomber Re-supply set. The RAF personel set is compatible with 1/72, even if a little smaller than they should be, but with a average height of 23mm who can be translated to 1.66 meters, don't rise problems. If the figures had many weapons or other items who can lool smaller than it should be, that would be a issue, but as they are, are just short people 😀
Ratch Posted February 4, 2016 Author Posted February 4, 2016 Airfix have never made 1/76 aircraft, they're all 1/72.Vehicles are a different matter, most of the Airfix range are 1/76 (although at some points in time the packaging stated they were 1/72). The History of Airfix - Kits on the Airfix Tribute Forum documents each kit individually, but even then there are anomolies. For example, the Bedford Ox in the RAF Recovery set is underscale at about 1/87.Most of the vehicles on my diorama are Airfix and Matchbox and will be 1/76. However, I think at least one other is 1/72.Airfix figures were originally scaled at HO/00 (about 1/76) but some (like the British WW2 Paratroops) are much larger. The best information on these sets is on the Plastic Soldier Review site.HTH
Agent .25i Posted February 4, 2016 Posted February 4, 2016 Thanks guys. And thanks for that link. I'll check it out.I've been looking for a fuel tanker in 1/72, plenty in 1/76 though with Airfix. Yay.
Agent .25i Posted February 7, 2016 Posted February 7, 2016 That's a wealth of info you have in the history of Airfix - kits, Ratch. Thank you for that.Do you think the AEC Matador that comes with the Airfix Matador/5.5 kit will look out of place towing a 172 Airfix Short Sunderland out of the water?/media/tinymce_upload/a1f1e6d0880395fa9c2bbba0cea48476.jpg
