Dave1953 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Why is the Teak Effect on the latest (and earlier) Hornby LNER Teak coaches so awful! Surely the technology is available to produce some realistic Teak finishes. Looking at the current crop, it's the very 'Yellow' grain effect that spoils the finish on what otherwise could be some nice coaches. I would be interested to hear the 'Honby View' on this one?
mjb1961 Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Hi ,if you are talking about the railroad and the train set versions it's because they are cheap ,if you want some real beauties you'll need to go up market at around £50 each ,I've got three of the Thompson teaks and they are simply stunning ,,,,,,,mjb
Wobblinwheel Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Clearly, the Railroad teak coaches are a JOKE as far as appearance. However, I do agree that some of the "high range" teaks are also a little too "pale". I have found out that brushing on a good layer of clear gloss helps to "deepen" the finish. A "mat" fishish on "varnished wood" is very much WRONG. Pledge Acryllic Floor Finish (used to be "Future Floor Polish") works pretty good for this. Follow the "grain" on each panel and it looks pretty good. I have also thought about "tinting" the clear with a little dark red to help get rid of the "yellow".
Ruffnut Thorston Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 The original Tri-ang Hornby "Teak" coaches (etc...) were produced by a "secret" process, adding a certain something into the plastic mix, that somehow "curdled" the colours, producing a "woodgrain" effect. Also used on the old Platform Seats (1962 patterm ones...)

The Doc Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 R4573 is the Non-corridor 3rd. It's sold out on this website but probably available elsewhere. Here's a link to the picture:https://www.hornby.com/uk-en/shop/wagons-coaches/passenger-coaches/lner-thompson-non-corridor-3rd-class-coach.htmlThe Thompson coaches were fake teak, I believe, as they weren't made of wood, just painted to look like it. The Gresleys were proper teak, but I don't suppose many people know exactly what colour they really were when brand new out of the works, since varnished wood changes colour over time and probably looked darker after very little time.
mjb1961 Posted January 31, 2016 Posted January 31, 2016 Hi ,sorry for the delay ,R4572 ,,R4573 ,,,And R4574 ,these are the three I have ,,three is enough on my layout ,they look great behind a Scotsman or mallard ,,,,
flyingfox4475 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 The Thompson mainline coach that hornby produced back in the late 1960's early 1970 were based on the BR mk1's. The blue box company are retooling the Thompson mainline coach in teak effect and will be out some time in the future, if we are lucky,. These are based on the newton coach by Edward Thompson, post 1945 and were painted in a fake teak effect.

Baz48 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Hi, Doc, further to your message, there are several original Gresley Teak coaches at the NRM in York, these are not in the Great Hall but in the back area,( I've forgotten what this area is called) but they are in there, near the LNER V2 Green Arrow.- Also there are Gresley teak coaches used on the North Yorks railway, I travelled in one of these behind the Tornado, a couple of years ago. "He who builds to every mans advice will have a very crooked house!"Regards, Barry.
Postman Prat Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 They also have a lot of 'Teaks' at the Severn Valley.
