Howbi Posted January 28, 2016 Posted January 28, 2016 Hi guys...........I have just installed a R8249 into my new Sutton Terrier...........it is wired correctly, black & red to pickups, grey & orange to motor..........all soldered connections covered in heatshrink...........Decoder reset via CV8 to 03 but it will only run in reverse on test track with Elite.Any ideas as to what can be wrong. This decoder was working ok in it's previous loco. HB
choralc Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Report yourself to Admin and stand in the corner until he moves your post. :) Sorry about the decoder. I pulled a wire off a non-Hornby decoder trying to squeeze it into a Hornby Drummond 700 today. Perhaps a gentle tug to see if this is what happened to you?
2e0dtoeric Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 If it runs one way, there isn't a broken wire, because the motor is getting power. It is more likely that somethng is jamming.Take the lid off again, and see if it works without it. That will give you a clue where to start looking.
Howbi Posted January 29, 2016 Author Posted January 29, 2016 Thanks 2e0............have tried every various thing but have unsoldered the decoder...the loco runs great on DC both ways......will get a new Hornby 4 pin X9659 which will be easier to fit with fewer wires to deal with. HB.
RDS Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 ... easier to fit with fewer wires to deal with ...Yes, but the 4 wires you have described will be exactly the same. Are you suggesting there may be a problem with your decoder, as you have had to reset it.
Fishmanoz Posted January 29, 2016 Posted January 29, 2016 Almost certainly a decoder fault, in fact I've had an X9659 fail exactly this way. Given the 9659 is just a different physical configuration of pretty much the same components in the 8249, the chances are the failure mechanism is exactly the same. Given we apparently have 2 faults the same, would be interesting to hear from anyone else who has experienced this to see if there is more of a pattern emerging? I was lucky, mine was in the Mixed Freight set while still under warranty so was fixed for free by my supplier who is also Hornby's Oz distributor.
tersono Posted January 30, 2016 Posted January 30, 2016 I've had an R8249 with exactly this fault recently. Installed it into Manston, loco ran forwards but not in reverse (in fact the controller detected a short). Fine on DC.Fitted a new decoder, all is now working.
Howbi Posted January 30, 2016 Author Posted January 30, 2016 I've just set up my faulty R8249 decoder on a breadboard with lights connected to yellow & white leads and the direction lights work correctly so I can still use this decoder in a lighting only situation...........nothing lost 😆 HB
