Harold Smith Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 The Government's Homes and Communities Agency is effectively forcing the Hovercraft Museum Trust at Lee-On Solent to scrap the last two SRN4 hovercraft, as immortalised in the much-loved Airfix kit, to make way for housing, and have given them just 24 hours to do something about it.Full details here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-35449474The Trust have started a petition against this. If you want to help, please sign it and/or circulate it on social media. You might also consider contacting the HCA and the DCMS (Dept of Culture Media and Sport - responsible for 'heritage' issues) via e-mail, Twitter or Facebook. The petition is here: https://www.change.org/p/homes-and-communities-agency-save-the-princess-anne-the-last-remaining-srn4-hovercraft-for-the-nationThanks for your time.
DavidJC Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 I've been round the museum on one of its Open Days and for what it is it's a good little museum and the two large hovercrafts are impressive in the extreme. It will be a sad day if the collection is broken up, let alone the scrapping of any of the exhibits. The museum occupies a tiny part of HMS Daedalus, a one time RNAS, and a huge amount of land. The town council/MoD/Government should be hanging their heads in shame; and all for housing that so many have voted against and don't want.
John Symmons Posted February 1, 2016 Posted February 1, 2016 When will British bureaucrats & bureaucracy learn the lesson "History is worth saving" it makes me ashamed sometimes to be British when I hear of the heavy handed way that bureaucracy can run rough-shod over things, and I feel the SRN4 is another case in point. The Hovercraft was a British invention but the bureaucrats as usual never had the ba*** to capitalise on it and as usual it was left to the US.This unfeeling British bureaucracy was one of the reasons I left the UK in 71 and again in 75, and on my visits back "home" over the years it seems that British society has only become more regulated, but I digress. At lest we can be greatfull for something; Airfix has survived. So come on all you Brtish Brits save YOUR heritage save the SRN4.Remember we do this for fun John the Pom
Rael Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 This is a sad case of simply not caring about the past. I love the SRN4 and remember seeing it just on Sunday in 007 Siamonds are forever. Good luck with the petition1
