Jimbo1707820979 Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Is anybody getting it ? (as opposed to "Catastrophic Failure" or R.I.P.)
Howbi Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 You are right, Jimbop, the HornbyGuide is no more, it has gone to meet it's maker, it is a non Guide pushing up the daisies. 😢 HB
Howbi Posted February 2, 2016 Posted February 2, 2016 Miraculous re-incarnation, the Hornby Guide is back 😆
Jimbo1707820979 Posted February 3, 2016 Author Posted February 3, 2016 Not back for me, unhappily. I tried various searches and clicks but still "cat. failure".Any tips please, you lucky chaps ?
Chrissaf Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 It seems to have been up and down recently like a yo-yo. This checker site, says it is down for everybody..The IP Address is 66.96.143.162 - this server hosts many other web sites as well as hornbyguide.com - see below. Pinging 66.96.143.162 functions OK. So the issue must be with the hornbyguide.com part of the shared server as the odd couple of sites I have checked at random from the list below work OK..This may be an indication that hornbyguide.com has ceased operating as a website service, but this cannot be verified at this time..ritztelecom.compremiumfuelpumps.commonarch-watch.comiensapremium.comamibearings.netsinfronterasbolivia.comnewashcogs.orgfootball4wishes.orgtcgcad.comathleticpromotionalevents.comhispanicity.comthothpublications.comkyprostv.comchurchhousepro.comdinastiaempresaria.netthequranicislam.orgcynthialeighton.comexampleex.orgsimpleitservices.comrambleinteractive.netthestevenbirnbaumcollection.comoceanobeachhotel.comblessaurora.comtouchstonedesign.usnbronson.comshelleympeters.comsomertonchamber.comcruisetac.comrisstudents.comalgodonesoptical.netmohamedalhaboob.cominnovativelaserwerkes.combasementrecordings.comgrupoenlace.netfertilizanteorgnicodeldesierto.comheartlandoldcatholic.orgrzeppa.org, sypherlink.commartincomp.comkaruarchitecture.comhoosierkennelclub.orgbraunstrees.comamberdigby.comnechamkin.comhornbyguide.comsoftree.commarac.orgmermaidsage.comnapleslegalhelp.comavzmt.org, hairxo.comworldchampiontkd.net
Jimbo1707820979 Posted February 3, 2016 Author Posted February 3, 2016 Chrissaf, thanks for the news, even tho bad.Presumably, Hornby run this site (as it bears their logo) ?
Chrissaf Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 No Jimbo, nothing to do with "Hornby Hobbies Ltd" at all AFAIK. The 66.96.143.162 server is physically located in the USA, not that is particularly significant in itself. The site was probably just using the logo under license or by agreement or perhaps even without agreement to which Hornby Hobbies turned a blind eye..Looking at the statistics and registration information for hornbyguide.com, there is absolutely no mention of Hornby Hobbies Ltd whatsoever. .The server is operated by GODADDY.COM a US based web hosting service.
Chrissaf Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 See areas circled in red in screen capture below. This shows that the Hornbyguide.com domain name registration expired today (3rd Feb 2016). A good indicator that the site has ceased operating../media/tinymce_upload/f970964b683e8e25b15f8f877a6ce01a.jpg
Chrissaf Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 More information available. Posted as an image. Thus, expect a moderation delay..Looking at some of the historical stats for the site. Showed that it wasn't particularly well used. It only averaged about 150 to 190 hits a day, probably not enough to financially justify its existence (regardless of how useful the few who used it found it).
poliss Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 The Hornby Guide is an unofficial website that resides in Australia.
Chrissaf Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 According to this web resource. The server is physically located in the City of Burlington, Boston, Massachusetts, USA.Additionally, this web resource ties the 66.96.143.162 IP address to hornbyguide.com and further states the physical location to be City of Burlington......the physical location is however somewhat irrelevant.
Rog RJ Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 I'm still able to access the site and view service sheets. Just retried it at 13:33 pm I've just left a comment on their feedback facility.
poliss Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Forget your searches Chris. As it says on the website 'This site is built by 'me' in Melbourne Australia, and is dedicated to Sam and Beau.'The domain hasn't expired. The website has just been a little flaky for the last week. It's not the first time it's happened.
Chrissaf Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Fair enough Poliss....straight from the horses mouth so to speak.....do you have any insight as to why the online information points in a completely different direction information wise. I acknowledge that a lot of these web search sites have 'out of date' info in their databases..PS - I just tried again at 13.40 and got a connection OK. However, I noted that on the Hornby Guide website it states that "The site is hosted by easyCGI in the U.S."
poliss Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 The site is hosted by easyCGI in the U.S. The relational database used is MySQL.
Chrissaf Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Hadn't seen your reply when I was doing my edit that has now timed out. So although web site built and managed by you in Melbourne the server is physically on US soil.
96RAF Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Who-is info normally gives you the registered domain name owner's details and the current validity of the site registration in addition to the DNS data (host server(s) address). Failure to re-register periodically per your registration authority's rules could mean losing the domain name.I have my old boys association domain names on automatic renewal with 123-Reg to preclude any such mishap.
Rog RJ Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Hadn't seen your reply when I was doing my edit that has now timed out. So although web site built and managed by you in Melbourne the server is physically on US soil. I don't think Poliss built or managed the site. When he says "built and managed by me" he is quoting text from the website. Quote from site"Extra InformationThis site is built by 'me' in Melbourne Australia, and is dedicated to Sam and Beau. Thankyou to Hornby and Tri-ang for the imagination over 50 years... The site is hosted by easyCGI in the U.S. The relational database used is MySQL. Original web templates taken from styleshout, and then completely wrecked..."
Flashbang Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 If you're talking about this web site? Its fine now....http://www.hornbyguide.com
Chrissaf Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Rog, oddly enough I was just coming back to this thread to ask Poliss to clarify. Because it struck me later that I didn't think Poliss was based in Australia. Then looking at his earlier reply again, it can be read in different ways. It was an easy mistake to make..So, whoever 'me' is...he/she/they are based in Melbourne.......the server is physically located in the US.......there is no official connection to Hornby Hobbies Ltd (this is actually stated on the website)......despite what the 'who-is' search services might say......the 'domain' registration has not expired.......the site is just experiencing erratic connectivity issues.
RB51 Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 It's been fine for me on a Mac (using Safari) for the lifetime of this thread. R-
Ruffnut Thorston Posted February 3, 2016 Posted February 3, 2016 Just to add...working OK just now from North Wales! ;)
