Howbi
Just fitted the Hornby X9659 4pin decoder into the Sutton Terrier.......firstly, prised off the smoke box door then removed the weight which I then cut in half horizontally.........the bottom half then refitted back into the smoke box.........then using a 3mm drill, cut a slot in the internal bulkhead to facilitate feeding the decoder leads through...........I prised open the minute lugs in the decoder socket to release the wire terminals which made soldering to the motor and pick-up wires much simpler & using heatshrink to seal exposed joints..........NB.....I covered the top of the motor with very thin flexi card as it is possible for wiring pushed up into the space could impinge the rotating armature.....so a satisfactory job done and the loco runs extremely well no doubt due to having 6 wheel pick-ups. tersono
Good to read. I've got a couple of Terriers that need decoders so will be trying something similar fairly soon :)
Bulleidboy
There is another posting on here - somewhere!!. You can attach both the Hornby R8249 and the Digitrax DZ125 decoders to the side of the motor with bath sealant. Wiring is the usual way. No need to remove, cut any of the weights. The decoder will sit between the motor and the body side.

pidder
Is there a service sheet for this engine, particularly BR 0-6-0 R 2165 B?
Fishmanoz
Did you look at the sheets on this site for one?
pidder
Fishmanoz sorry, not sure what you are referring to, I am just seeking the number of an appropriate Hornby service sheet.
96RAF
@pidderFishy is asking if you have looked for the service sheet for you R2165 loco on the Hornby main website - Help & Advice - Service Sheets area. Go here https://www.hornby.com/uk-en/downloads/view/index/cat/2/ then either type in R2165 into the search box(where it says Enter a SKU, product name or resource name in the text field below) and download the result or look for service sheet by number HSS216 in the folders. pidder
RAF96 Thanks, found the service sheet, but doesn't show removal of body from chassis, presume just the two small screws at the rear end...
Howbi
Hi Pidder............Ignore the screws that hold the couplings..........you need to undo the the screw at each end of the bottom plate then the body lifts off. HBps.......the operating and maintenance instructions should be in the box and the model no. is R3248.

pidder
howbiman That was quick, thanks for the offer, but all I wanted was advice on how to remove the body, which I've now done. next step to fit a decoder...
GWR LNER fan 4472
I had one of these locos in 2012 (R3117 number 32670 in early BR black) and I had to store the decoder in the little bit behind the bunker with wiring going under the body to the motor. Don't know what your model is like though it may be slightly different.
pidder
GWR & LNER Thanks, I'm considering what is best decoder...
GWR LNER fan 4472
I've got the four pin one (X9659) as it's the only one that fits in most small engines, mainly 0-4-0s but also a few 0-6-0s.
poliss
Have you looked at Z Scale decoders pidder?
pidder
I have an X9659, probably my best option. Still not sure if it will go alongside the motor as bulliedboy suggested.
dh2807
I have fitted a digitrax DZ125 decoder using double sided tape to the side of the motor which removes the need to cut and dismantle any of the loco body.....easy!
