Storage while not in use?

Unfortunately I can't keep my track assembled permanently so I am looking at how best to store my track, controllers and cars while I need the dining room for more 'grown up' activities.

Other than just using large plastic boxes from the usual outlets, is there anything specific out there or that anyone would recommend?

Moisture is the biggest problem. There are many options to keep humidity at a minimum either using chemicals or electric-powered.

Many treat the rails with automatic transmission fluid that has Dexrton in it. Some people use "inox" or Balistol. Personally I steer away from WD40 because it is petroleum based and can hurt the plastic. Some claim it works fine.

The second problem is dust, but if they are in a closed box that should not be a problem.

Also remember that the tires are susceptible to moisture and heat as well. Like real cars, storing the cars so that their wheels don't touch the ground.

Personally I use cardboard "bankers boxs". they are rectangular and certainly suit neat stacking of track inside. The main thing is to stack the track so it has no chance of warping. Next time it comes out you want it all flat! Then avoid the loft as moisture and temperature variation there can be high. For loose cars I bubble wrap them, but the ideal storage is the box the cars come in. I have not used anything on my track and find that it is fine when I next get it out.

Almost forgot - I have even made up my own box just for my digital track, as the lane change straights are a straight and half long. does the same job as the bankers box just a different shape.

Thanks Andy P. and Blagard. Good tip about keeping the track flat as I didn't think about it warping. The crossover section I got as part of the Spectre set is proving a challenge at the moment as it is a fairly large piece and doensn't fit in any of the spare boxes I have. I haven't come up with a solution for that yet.

I have treated myself to a Carrera carry case for the cars. Putting them back in the boxes is preferable but it takes a while to put them in and out, and I'd like to have them all available for racing without the hassle. Cost me £35 but a bit of an investment I think.

Regarding the crossover: Because 2 sides are longer than the other it does hang very well on the wall by "straddling" a nail or hook. Wrapping it in plastic will help keep dust off...
