latchford Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 Hi all have received the above nice model but for one issuie, the van used to convey the coffin has no nem coupler pockets if think it's a repainted item from rovex days shame as it does not look right. Any comments welcome ☹️
walkingthedog Posted February 14, 2016 Posted February 14, 2016 This would be better in the General section latchford, you I'll get more replies. What sort of coupling does it have? Edit: I've just had a look. Cut the couplings off and attach some new ones. I've just done that to some coaches.
LCDR Posted February 15, 2016 Posted February 15, 2016 /media/tinymce_upload/86216ebc60d27ac0aa412dfd87f0b98f.jpg The 'Utility Van' first appeared with the original Tri-ang 9" carriages way back in 1958. This is the page from the 4th edition catalogue (some of the 9 inch coaches actually appeared the year before.) The Funeral van is a recent version, but is basically the same model. It has the old Mark 1 bogies. The old R226/R227 is not 100% accurate. The roof is wrong, it should have a eliptical profile, the planks are denoted by raised lines and not grooves, the underframe trussing is from the 9 inch coaches, loosely based on Mark 1 girder trusses, and should really be rods supported by queen posts, the bogies should be Fox pattern, the corridor connections are too small, and the doors are too thick. Roxey Mouldings do a kit to improve some of these features, but I also found that the roof is better tackled by grafting two and a half roofs from the SR ventilated goods van together.
Bulleidboy Posted March 20, 2016 Posted March 20, 2016 I would imagine the luggage van in the set is the same as this - R4451 Pullman Luggage Van .
Ruffnut Thorston Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I would imagine the luggage van in the set is the same as this - R4451 Pullman Luggage Van . That is the one. It was issued as a "solo" model a few years ago, before the Train Pack. There is one other difference between th emodel and the real van used for the funeral train. The real one has a pair of windows added to the centre pairs of doors each side. The model doors are compromised, as they were made to be openable..."With 12 opening doors"... http://www.ehattons.com/33073/Hornby_R4451_SR_Bogie_Luggage_Van_Pullman_livery_as_used_for_Sir_Winston_Churchill_s_funeral/StockDetail.aspx
Nick_ Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 Cut the couplings off and attach some new ones. I've just done that to some coaches. For someone with shakey hands and is not so brave as to just start cutting in case I ruin something, can you expand on how you would cut the old-style hornby coupling off a coach and how you would attach a new one?
walkingthedog Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 There are quite a few variation of modern couplings with different ways to fit them. Have a look on this site send the Bachmann one. I just cut the old ones off with wire cutters and then find the best ones to replace them. Usually I find a nut send bolt is the best way.Nut just about visible in the photo. /media/tinymce_upload/cc7a65025421b466e002e3cee753ceeb.jpg
walkingthedog Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 I have posted a picture Nick, be along soon.
VESPA Posted March 22, 2016 Posted March 22, 2016 This maybe of interest also..... http://www.svsfilm.com/nineelms/wcf.htm
81F Posted March 30, 2016 Posted March 30, 2016 I had the same problem with my Imerial Airways set and even contacted Hornby about the possibility of supplying wide couplings with the Winston Churchill set but to no avail. However I got round the problem with the Imperial Airways (green) version of the same van by fitting Bachmann bullied bogies. Although these do not have nem pockets they are available with narrow coulings. In addition (an my real reason for changing them) the bogies are of the corrct SR pattern and not a BR Mk 1. Note I did need to get nuts, bolts and washers to get them to fit at the right height.
