Most of the cars I own have their original boxes, but I now have a number of cars that don't (mainly ones I got for my son to bash about) Any suggestions on the best way to store lose cars. Is it possible to buy the polystyrene set boxes for example?

Most important is that the tires may flatten out if there is weight on them and if they get too warm,. Most people just wrap them in bubble wrap and store them in a cool, dry place.
