HornbyBob Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 Just acquired a 1930s O gauge 20v Flying Scotsman in good order. However it only seems to run in reverse. Reversing direction on controller makes no difference. There is a single operating rod but change of position In or Out makes no difference. Any ideas? thanks
poliss Posted February 17, 2016 Posted February 17, 2016 I would get the controller checked by an electrician. The insulation inside has probably perished and it could be dangerous.
LCDR Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 I presume you are running it on 3 rail track? Some of these 1930s Hornby locos have a peculiar 'patent' reversing mechanism which operates by stopping and restarting the locomotive, on full power. However the control rod should also reverse it. Inside the loco is an electro magnet which operates a cam which is a reversing switch. I have the equivalent 'Royal Scot' which works just like this. The reversing gear operates when full 20 V AC is applied and takes a bit of getting used to, it took me a while to fathom out how it worked.
LCDR Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 The knob will isolate the automatic reverse, but it then has to be pulled out and pushed in again to reverse the loco, or in your case make it go forward. (sounds daft, but it worked for me!)
