sarah_westley Posted February 19, 2016 Posted February 19, 2016 Hi I'm new to Hornby. We bought a Blue Rapier train set for our son and we're trying to connect it to other trains. Is there a new coupling or something we can buy?
walkingthedog Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 I don't think blue rapier can be coupled to anything else it's a complete unit. I could be wrong though.
96RAF Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 It has simple plastic hooks on the end cars and matching holes on the centre car, which all part of the bogies - see service sheet 357 downloadable from this site. No couplings at the extreme ends. No commercial adapter system that I know of. you could possibly glue a nem socket under there and attach to another train using Bachmans coach 'pipe' coupling links.
LCDR Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 The Blue Rapier is intended only to run as a unit with itself. Unfortunately extra carriages are no longer available for it.
trainlover23 Posted February 22, 2016 Posted February 22, 2016 you could possibly glue a nem socket under there and attach to another train using Bachmans coach 'pipe' coupling links. This would not work

trainlover23 Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 you could possibly glue a nem socket under there and attach to another train using Bachmans coach 'pipe' coupling links. This would not workExplain... Simples not enough clearance and the design in the first place

Chrissaf Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 This would not work....explain!.If you look at coaches for which the Bachmann pipe couplings are designed to work on. The NEM pocket is fitted to a swinging arm that provides extra rotation movement in addition to the rotation of the bogie. The design of the this swinging arm is very clever indeed as it elongates on the turns to position the NEM pocket further away from the coach, thus giving additional coach to coach clearance when traversing a curve. If a NEM pocket was glued to a bogie, then the Bachmann pipe coupling would be too rigid and couple the coaches too close together on the turns. The probability of the coupling rigidity in conjunction with the too close clearance causing derailments would be very high indeed..Rather than gluing, you can buy conversion NEM pockets that could be fixed with a screw via a mounting hole made by Symoba**. This would allow the NEM pocket to swivel on its mounting. This would still be subject to having a suitable fixing position available on the Rapier bogies to suit..Note** round screw in a square hole 😆

Chrissaf Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 Or even be a busy Mum.......if the name is anything to go by.
96RAF Posted February 23, 2016 Posted February 23, 2016 I'll turn my BluRap downside up and have a shufti at the possibilities as I have some NEM sockets and some pipe couplings in my box and a selection of NEM socket locos, wagons and coaches to match against..
96RAF Posted February 28, 2016 Posted February 28, 2016 In the vague hope the OP comes back... I just had a quick look at this again and if you want to join 2 Rapiers (or similar round nosed cars) then you can use those plastic extension bars that come with Hornby point motors. Trim off the 3 pins on one of the bars and glue it to the cab end bogie of one Rapier as shown in the picture using a little bit of plastic card to get it level. You don't need to enlarge the hole - mine was like this from a previous trial on something or other. Now cut off just the middle pin of the second bar and glue it to the cab end bogie of the other Rapier as shown in the other picture. I didn't trim the middle pin for the picture so it shows. I just used little bits of double sided tape for the test but you should use strong glue once you are happy on the fitting position.. The body skirt acts as a support guide and the long arm allows articulation to follow curves. I dont need to join 2 Rapiers or similar together so have not track tested it on the move, so you should check its ok on your layout curves. /media/tinymce_upload/bf968cf6857d56d8edf0c93349d4c8f0.JPG /media/tinymce_upload/e1e3250fd27d6abd5690cc93628aa17e.JPG
