Vespa - as Chrissaf wrote in the 'folding table' thread -

The forum has a known issue when responding with long replies. If it takes more than about 15 minutes to write your reply it can get lost. Usually accompanied by an error message saying you are not logged in.

.

The 'work around(s)' when you think in advance that a reply will take a long time to construct are:

1) Copy the written reply text to the clipboard before clicking the Green 'Reply' button, so that if it doesn't appear and gets lost you can paste the clipboard into a fresh reply and try again.

2) Write your reply first in a text application such as 'Notepad' or 'Wordpad' then paste into the forum reply box. So that there is a minimal delay between opening a 'reply' text box and submitting it to be posted.

The possible issue with 'workaround' 1 is that there is potential for your reply to end up being duplicated.

Another idea Vespa is to write your post out in Word (or one of the similar free applications) and copy / paste at your leisure. I know, I know, we don't all think about it in time but..... R-

Ah - 2e0 was faster off the mark.

Vespa, my workaround 1 option is not a huge amount of additional "faffing" activity, just using a 'Control C' keyboard command. Treat it as an insurance policy. Less frustrating than loosing 30 minutes of work.

.

I find if I use 'Control C' as a matter of course (which I do), then I start doing it on 'auto pilot' without even thinking about it.

.

A third alternative 'workaround' is to initially post a 'holding' post, something like:

"More to come....watch this space"

Then you can edit it with your full intended post and take as long as you like doing it. Editing a post never ever seems to time out, providing you do not close the page containing the edit box window. I've held an edit box open for over an hour whilst constructing a very long reply and had it post successfully.

It seems to me it's only the first post after logging on that has the problem if over 15-20 minutes.  Keep your first post short,Cohen you can take as long as you like with any others.

I did try posting just part of what I wanted to say in my original post but that's when I got the problem of the Cancel Save buttons ending up over the top of my edits.  See my post in Hospital Time where I experimented with this to find it happens as soon as the Reply box has to extend beyond the standard.  The buttons stay where they are so end up over the post.

This time I spent a good 20 minutes composing a response, which I posted but it never appeared. I tried a screen refresh but no joy. Back arrow didn't work, just put me back to main forum.

Obviously despite all the advice given I forgot to copy the content before posting, so its gone.

I was not force logged out and immediately was able to come over to this topic and post the problem.

Now I have to go back and try to remember what I wrote.

Adam the Admin has just come back to say that my post referred to above was blocked by the profanity filter which is why it bombed out, so probably not a Forum fault at all, especially seeing as I wasn't logged out, just lost my posting.

So while not related to the logged out while posting issue, perhaps that does instead raise a question of whether the "post blocked for [x]" message is prominent/clear enough for users.

The profanity filter is strange. I was blocked the other day, the profanity being the short (3 letters) version of the word Japanese.

I tried to post with "that" horrible word and got "

  • The Post was saved but needs to be moderated for profanity!

Did Mary Poppins set the filter?

What's profane about "Nip" 😆

It would make sense for the filter to highlight the errant word(s) and allow you to correct what may be an honest typo.

I have had posts stopped by the filter before but never noticed any flag indicating this, to me they just never post and disappear.

Maybe the warning lies out of my screen window at the time, when I would prefer it to sit fat dumb and happy centre screen and flashing bright red so I could do something about it.

As for the warning message, if profanity is detected it appears in a green box after you've saved the post (in place of where the normal 'post has been saved' message appears). The message could definitely be more prominent but, unfortunately, this is unlikely to change in the foreseeable future.

Couldn't you at least modify the stylesheet so it shows in a different coloured box to "post saved" (red or something?) which on it's own would help highlight it more.  Once you're used to seeing a green box saying "post saved" human nature makes one likely to stop paying close attention to the actual text content on future viewings.

  • 11 months later...

This issue seems to have come back to haunt the forum again. Even as a victim of it myself, I find it is near impossible to replicate on demand and it seems completely random in nature. What I have noticed in the current round of this issue, that I never saw before. Is that I can come back to my PC after a period of non forum activity to find my account has logged out. This never happened to me before.
