Can someone please help me identify this train?

Recommended Posts

Really need a picture to confirm, but it sounds like a Hornby Dublo 3-rail loco. Production ended in 1963 (I believe), so that makes it at least 53 years old.

If it's still in a box, and if the box and train is in good condition, it's worth a little bit of money - take a look on e-bay, see if you can find an identical engine in variuos conditions to guage the value - if you are interested in the value that is...

On e-bay you will be able to also find some track and a controller (make sure you get an old Hornby Dublo Controller because these things use quite high power)... then you can run it and enjoy it. They really are great trains if it is Hornby Dublo,

The loco will be numbered 80054 and be part of the goods set. If the engine is 80059 then it will be worth a bit more. Sadly the bottom has fallen out of Hornby Dublo unless the items are mint boxed and very rare. Examples of which are the SR EMU, Deltic St Paddy, E3002, City of Liverpool and 48159. Hattons recently had an SR EMU s/h for £1000. They then reduced it and it doesn't appear to have gone back in stock. I think the last price was £750. Your set in a box "may" reap £60- £80ish depending on condition and market influences.

Made by Meccano Ltd Liverpool in the 1950's cost new was around £5

That is a lovely loco, How, the detail, for its age, is great.  And looks like a 'showroom' model too.  Interesting that you have converted it to dcc, bet it is a good runner.  I have a 2 rail version, not in such good nick, will have to give it a run now!  Also have a 'Duchess' in BR red, put alongside my 2013 Hornby version, still looks the part.

Howbieman, I too have that loco and 80059, both in excellent condition. I loved the way that the screw in the bunker made it slow running if required. Great loco for the 50's. I got 80059 and City of Liverpool as a surprise Christmas present in 1964. I got 80054 in the 70's, in excellent condition from Hattons, when old Mr Hatton was alive. ( can never get to refer to him as Norman, only Mr Hatton for some reason)

@fazy..........the screw is threaded into a springy plate that bridges across the back of the magnet... adjusting the screw moves this plate closer or further away from the magnet and alters the magnetic field and allows fine adjustment of the slow running.  HB.

I have the Hornby Dublo N2 class 69567, which came with a two vans, an open wagon, a tanker and a brake van in a suit case with track and controler. I recieved this from an elderly man I know a while back. This is my only Hornby Dublo set and from the papers that came with it, one van appears to have come additionaly to the set originaly. I have no idea weather the set is at all safe to use, that's why I haven't run it yet, also I'm not entirely certain how to run it. It looks very nice, not quite as nice as the one pictured above though.

Good point Poliss,  the old ones used rubber cable sheathing which will have gone brittle with age,  You are probably wiser to use a modern power controller, but find one that can handle up to 12 volts DC 2 amp, as these old locomotives can be a bit power hungry. The little cheap train set controllers sold nowadays are just not man enough.

These old diecast three rail trains will last for ever provided they are kept dry.  Hoiwever they benefit from lubrication, more so than modern trains which hardly need any, which should still be done sparingly using a light oil, such as that sold for sewing machines.  Track also needs to be kept clean, but the centre pick up skate will also help to keep it clean and if the train has metal couplings the current return is via umpteen wheels. You can still buy 3 rail track second hand if you want to extend the layout.
