DavidJC
I have bought myself one from my local model shop. I'm not an RAF person so forgive me. The colour schemes options are between camouflage and 'silver'. Is the silver an attempt to replicate natural metal, or is the scheme actually painted silver over the airframe? For instance, the Lightning calls for silver/aluminium finish but to my mind that was to depict the natural metal they were finished in. I have no doubt someone can point me in the right direction. Jonathan Mock
The "B" scheme was finished in aluminium paint, not matural metal.http://www.britishjets.net/wps/jetpages.nsf/survivors/wh364_abingdon_200668.jpg
DavidJC
Ahh thank you Jonathan 😀 I wasn't certain. When I get round to starting it I will know to actually use aluminium rather than using Alclad/AK metaliser paints, which I am perhaps bravely if not foolhardily going to use on the 1/48 Lightning. peebeep
Our local ATC used to be keeper of a T7. It lived outdoors and needed constant attention, in itself something that makes you realise why it's a good idea to have a protective coating on an airframe. I digress. The guy that was charged with keeping the T7 in good shape made an enquiry to St Athan to find out what was the most authentic and correct paint to use on the Meteor. He was instructed to go to Woolworth's and buy a few gallons of their aluminium paint - that was what the RAF restoration team was using on aircraft passing through their workshop. High Speed Silver as it was known was actually cellulose nitrate dope, mixed with a specified proportion of aluminium powder. Apparently Woolworth's aluminium was a perfect match. Discostu
These haven't hit the shelves of shops in Australia yet,but I am thinking seriously about getting one. I really only do 1/48 ww2 fighters, but this Meteor looks good. How does the kit stack up? I know it's not been out long, but have any of you guys built or partially built one yet? Any opinions would be appreciated. Cheers,Stuart.

DavidJC
I can't honestly say yet Stuart, at least as far as a build goes. I've opened the box and looked at the parts and instructions and all appear to be good. You have an option to leave at least one or the other engine cowling off (if not both). The level of detail looks good too and, if I'm not mistaken and though I don't know if an engine can be posed up on it, there's a trolley for an engine. It won't be any time soon that I will be building it, but initial impressions (only) are good.
peebeep
Hi Stuart, I bought one last Sunday, at the moment I can only go by the box contents, but it looks superb. There are a number of parts surplus to requirements that suggest at the very least a photo recce variant is in the pipeline, as it stands the kit contains optional narrow or broad intakes and both styles of canopy hood, so by adding some aftermarket decals just about any F8 in service is possible. Detailing is good, you get a very busy cockpit, gun bays, engines (including a cradle for displaying off the aircraft), separate air brakes and a complex undercarriage. The decal sheet is quite small, but packed with the main markings and dozens of stencils and is well printed. I know several people who think it is a bit expensive, but in my opinion it looks worth the money and Airfix appear to have raised the bar yet again. SunrayOne
I can agree that the level of detail appears to be superb on this Meteor. Just got the kit last week, so obviously havent built it, but a look over the sprues indicates that this is going to be an absolute beauty to build. And yes - you can build it with a variety of panels removed and one engine on a stand if you want. Appropriate parts are included.
Discostu
Thanks for your input, guys. I'm off to my local hobby shop to get them to put one away for me when they come in. Might see if they have a Airfix 1/48 EE Lightning as well, and start a collection of cold war jets! Cheers, Stuart.
