Jimbo1707820979
Is there any general concensus as to which is the most beautiful loco ? Something like the accompanying photo in the automotive world.Thinks; this should stir up a few hornets nests./media/tinymce_upload/c73ee2126fc7d623c5c4bd64f323a589.jpg
81F
Beuty is very much in the eye of the Beholder! But i have heard some say the Midland Spinner: http://train-photos.com.s3.amazonaws.com/8227.jpgHowever, above the underframe I think the Dean Achills (Lord of the Isles) in original form is better with only the outside framed front bogie letting it down: https://earlyrailwaysunpublished.files.wordpress.com/2012/02/3003-avalanche.jpgBut that assumes you lke the larhe chimney/big dome type locos! Yelrow
Not seen many open top Diesels, or steam locos, let alone pullman cars. john
walkingthedog
I think the Gresley V2 takes a bit of beating. Looks like it's travelling at speed even when it's standing still.
poliss
Stephenson's Rocket. Anyone that says it isn't is just wrong. 🤐
Chrissaf
Not into Steam myself, but I do rather fancy the USA Steam Streamliners.......something like this for example.

Postman Prat
Among the older steam locos I favour the Midland Spinner, the Dean Single and also the SE&CR D class 4-4-0 in it's current condition in the NRM.Among the later locos I agree with WTD - the V2, without doubt. Fazy
The LMS British Legion in original form. Or the Princess Royal.
Postman Prat
The A4s a long way down my list. Castle and Black 5 are ahead of it, as is B1 and P2 with the A4 style smokebox
GreenGiraffe22
The SECR Wainwright C Class is a strong contender for me, in fact almost anything made by SECR, I don't know what it is about them, I just love that style, to me, that is how steam engines should look! :)
VESPA
Duchess with smoke deflectors and of course the magnificent Britannias!! By the way, I have a super car the new Jaguar XE R Sport in dark blue.
GreenGiraffe22
Duchess with smoke deflectors... I'm probably almost entirely alone in thinking this, but I find smoke deflectors to be really, really ugly...
JJ73
Have you not thought of taking the tires off & then running it along a Railway track??? 😉
walkingthedog
Some locos look dreadful when their smoke deflectors are removed. I think the A3 is enhanced with the German type.
Postman Prat
By the way, I have a super car the new Jaguar XE R Sport in dark blue.Hi Vespa Vanguard, or Oxford Die-cast (lol) 😆 I had you in mind for the Britannia. To me, although I really like the Duchess, it's not really a beauty - it's too bulky for that. It's a bruiser!!!
Bulver
For me, the streamlined 'Duchesses' really fit the bill. I was brought up on BR (WR) stock, but for style, the NRM streamliner exhibit is the bees knees. One day, I might get to see it in the metal! In the meantime, the Hornby model will do, thank you very much
walkingthedog
After the V2 I've always loved the City of Truro. For me the beauty of a steam loco often depends on what colour it is painted.

Dave1943au
I think the most beautiful loco is the original Parallel Bouler Scots and Patriots and the 3F.

GWR LNER fan 4472
For me it's got to be the GWR Hall or Castle class. The GWR had many beautiful locos wouldn't you agree? I also like the BR Duke of Gloucester and the Britannias. Tank engine wise, definitely the exGWR 45xx in early BR livery. But to be honest, any steam engine is beautiful in my opinion. walkingthedog
I'm a great GWR fan but one of their locos I've always considered to be very ugly is the Great Bear pacific. Just looks all wrong to me. Must agree with you though, a pristine polished Castle is a wonderful sight.
