VESPA
At the moment I have in my "works" 70027 Rising Star (Ex 70025 Western Star) all renumbered and new nameplates with detailing in the cab and an experienced crew, checking out all the controls and gauges. As it came with the older goal post tender coupling, that was changed for a smaller version. The axle ends have been blackened and made to look better. The only thing foxing me at present is getting a crisp brass look to the hand holds on the smoke deflectors. I am working on this as my dexterity is not as good these days. I am also working on a set of cab doors made from plasticard. It's a nice model in the era of "Super Detail" China made. Minor detail problems inc a fitted battery box on the right hand running plate that really shouldn't be there and it should only have two sand fillers per side instead of three. Removing those may damage the model. Luckily there was never a speedo added to this loco in real life and the boys at Doncaster got rid of the unique sand fillers fitted by Swindon works, along with the battery slung under the drivers side of the cab.I have yet to fit the brake gear, front steps and vacuum pipes. I will be fitting express loco lamps (non working) and possibly a flashy "Red Dragon" headboard. Photos may appear at some time in the future. Ruffnut Thorston
For "colouring in" brass (and silver coloured) bits, have you tried the Brass and Silver effect marker pens available from good stationers? The nibs are not the finest, though there may be fine ones I have not yet come across. I have used these pens for picking out the pipes on loco boiler backheads, inside the cabs. There are also white "paint markers" in varius nib sizes. I use these for picking out the gauges in the cab, and also give the regulator handle a coat of white, as an undercoat for a coat of Red marker pen! The white pens are also useful for colouring the ends of hand brake levers on wagons, white diagonal lines for End Door wagons (on the strapping of wooden body wagons that is!) and other white bits! 96RAF
I've used these 'gel' pens to draw in road linings, using silver/grey in lieu as white is never white on the road, the same as black tarmac is never black. As you say Gold is as good as brass.
VESPA
Thank you Sarah and RAF, I had thought about these pens but as yet not been near a stationers to get one. I used to use them when I did titles on photo mounts many years ago. It appears that the supermarkets don't seem to stock them where I live. VESPA
UPDATE.....I have done the cab doors now and with the suggestions of the gold and silver pens I managed to get a set in WH Smiths in Llandudno, yesterday. They have done the job well but I still had to use just a tad of matt black around a couple of the handholes. Very useful pens and I am looking forward to using them inside cabs of lesser detailed locos. I will have to go through my other Brits now to see which GW Swindon ones need the treatment. I decided that the cab doors will be shut and have covered black platic card with green blanking patches from Modelmaster as the green match is excellent. The crew are painted Hornby models held in place with Pritt, which is clean and easy to use, doing the job very well indeed. So it's just lamps, brake rodding and vac pipes. I have been busy with other things so it has dragged on a bit. By the way there is a 2016 catalooooge available if you didn't know 😆
