Badgercote
Sorry if this may be an old question but is it possible to fit lights, eg headlamps, into dc diesels?I get the thing about dcc fitting but I can't recall if you can do it straight into dc locos. If you can how is it done?
Chrissaf
YES, the only limitation would be of course they would have variable brightness to completely off depending upon loco speed controller setting..Would you want them to be directional? i.e white and red LEDs at each end, that switch between being white or red depending upon direction. That is doable as well.
Chrissaf
How to diagram:Resistors are 1,000 ohms/media/tinymce_upload/054415030725337327f5302cbce2dee9.jpg
Chrissaf
There is a slight possibility that the 'Back EMF' generated by the electric motor might cause some low level flickering of the LED that is supposed to be unlit. But the circuit above is extremely basic..The White LEDs could be 3mm round variety. The Red LEDs could be 'top hat' variety (the bit of the LED showing through the bodywork would be only 2mm). poliss
How about using Bi Colour LEDs Chris?
2e0dtoeric
Bi-colours would work, but most loco's have red and white in different locations.

Badgercote
Wow !!I thought I only wanted a pair of white (-ish) headlights at the front, anything more than that would be ok but not essential for me.Do you simply wire a pair of leds or similar 12v bulbs to the pickups or motor connections or is it a bit more complicated than that?I'm not too bothered about directional lighting at this stage. 96RAF
A simple way would be to look at the service sheet for an early diesel such as Class 56, R2335, ss229, which has simple bulbs wired into the pickups to motor circuit, fairly easy to pickout on the diagram How these are wired.spare bulbs can be sourced from Hornby or Peters Spares. X8349 for instance if you dont want to fiddle with leds and resistors.
Chrissaf
See this link for Rob's (RAF96) suggestion.http://www.petersspares.com/hornby-x8349-class-56-front-rear-bulbs-with-wires-diodes.ir
96RAF
Good ref out Chris and I see it includes diodes to ensble directional lighting logic.
