BR/GWR green

I am hoping to buy an additional Star but it needs to be GWR.

As I already have both Knight of the Grand Cross and Princess Alice I was wondering if the BR Glastonbury Abbey was the same shade of green as the GWR locos as I would hope to removet the BR emblem on the 4000 galon tender, replace with GWR transfers then swap with a 3500 gallon tender from a Railroad Hall (4901)

There are more knowledgable people than me 81F but as none of them replied I will have a go. I hope that I will be corrected if I have got it wrong.

I remember reading but I cannot find the source that the last version of GWR locomotive green and BR locomotive green were very similar, possibly even the same, but fewer coats or undercoats were used so it looked a little less rich. Remember though that after a few weeks near to a working locomotive chimney followed by cleaning with an oil soaked rag and arguments about exact shades start to sound a bit silly.

However the lining was different. BR did not line the fire box or the cab front. GWR cab lining followed the line of the cab and got lost in the top of the brass window surround but BR cab lining made a rectangle below the window. This was the most obvious difference. The cylinder lining was different. GWR used a rectangle. BR used two verticle stripes. BR did not paint a thin line below the footplate and did not line the buffer beam.

In short, changing from BR to GWR might be a bit harder than you think but unless you want an ex-works locomitive the shade of green will not be the problem.

This would appear to be my 100th post and is essentially a confession for sounding off before checking my facts.

I think I got it wrong on the cab lining. My description was correct for the cab lining on a Castle but Stars do not have cab windows and BR lining seems to follow GWR practice of ling round the whole cab.

I stand by my other comments.

Thanks everyone but I've probably answered the first part of my own question. Having seen two together at a recent exhibition they seem near enough. The big difference is the side of the running plate is green on the BR loco - nothing a bit of black paint wouldn't fix.

However, when swapping the tender it took me 20 minutes of fiddling to find that the socket on the 4000gal tender is the opposite way round. worst still when I put them back on the track I get ERROR. When I take the DCC blanking plate out the error goes away. The only thing I can think of is that either that the tenders/loco combinations is wired differently. Good job I tried the tender without the chip first! So anyone else contemplating a swap beware.

Not sure of the fix but looing at the Star tender I think I can remove all the electrics and swap but that will depend on any tender pickups GRRR!

OK I think I've got to the bottom of it.

When I tried the 4000g tender from Glastonbury Abbey  on either of my Railroad Halls I get error. but when hitched it up to Knight of the Grand Cross no error - conclusion Halls wired differently to Stars.

Off to do some soldering :(

 Hi Fazy,

I'm afraid I've wimped out! Instead of sticking the 4000g tender on the back of a Hall I've coupled it up to another project that I've been working on (which is based on a Star) and Given Glastonbury Abbey a Lode Star Body and a Knight of the Grand crss tender)

As to what I am working on I'll post a photo under a new thread (possibly entitled "Guess what I'm working on". As there'll be a photo may take a while to get moderated.
