Flying Scotsman noise

Recently purchased a Flying Scotsman R3284 TTS with decoder removed for Analogue use.

Running it via a pulsewave controller, all seemed well until i noticed a prominent motor noise like a buzzing.

Is this normal for this model? my other engine, a pullman, is whisper silent.

Any enlightment would be so useful.

I prefer to use straight DC controllers myself. Modern motors shouldn't need PWM for slow speed running.
