Tomos88
HiI am looking to re-start my model railway collection. I have alot of Hornby track from when i first started collecting model railways, however i moved at one point to collecting Fleischmann when i was bought a Fleischmann set for a birthday. I found the Fleischmann very good quality and generally the ready ballast track was easier to use and more practical. Due to life commitments, i stopped collecting and sold alot of my Fleischmann track, but kept the locomotives, wagons etc.... I started recently ballasting my old hornby track using gaugemaster ballasted underlay (i will be honest i dont have the time to commit to doing the ballasting properly so this easy, and relativly cheap alternative was for me the right option at the time). I would like to go back to purchasing some Fleischmann track as well, and was wondering am i able to use both the hornby track and Fleischmann track on the same layout (powered by the same adaptor)? The ballast underlay raises the hornby track so its nearly the same height as the Fleichmann so that should be an issue, but i dont honestly know where i stand in mixing the tracks, and will both tracks work fine off one power adaptor (either Fleischmann or Hornby i have both). Thank you
Ruffnut Thorston
I do think that in general terms the two systems are compatable... The gauge is the same, and I think that the Fleischmann track is also "code 100", the hieght of the rail section. A seller has said that Fleischmann fishplates are also suitable for PECO and Hornby code 100 track. http://www.keaygroup.co.uk/mdr/mdr/762-fleischmann-6436.html Looking at photos, the fishplates (Rail Joiners) are on the same side as Hornby Track, so it looks good! poliss
I'm not so sure. The rail joiners on the Profi Track look different. Might fit if you use Hornby rail joiners. can't really say.I use N gauge track of different makes, and although some seller say the rail joiners are suitable for such and such track, I had great difficulty fitting them. It's not really the height that counts. It's the profile of the track.
Tomos88
Thank you for the replies, at the moment i am in the early stages of this plan so i am unable to try the track connection at the moment but i may look at trying the joiners on the link above.Am i being naive in questioning weather both tracks will run of a Hornby Fleischmann controller/transformer? Given Fleischmann is German, is there likely to be an issue in regards the differant voltage outputs? All my locomotives are not DCC (to be frank i have not really read up on the DCC - its something i need to consider).
poliss
No. The output voltage is the same worldwide. It would only be a problem if you used Marklin AC locos and coaches. If you use Hornby and Profi Track you will need to put some kind of underlay under the Hornby track to get the rails to the same height. I use strips of Plasticard.
