New Elite Updater....

Those with eagle eyes will have spotted the new Elite firmware updater is available on the download page.

Although the revision is still at v1.42 you can now adjust a new setting to cater for various PC speeds, which should now allow those with Win 8 & 10 to sucessfully install the update. It is highly advised that you fully read and understand the Read-Me file before attempting to use the new updater.

I'm working from an iPad at present so I can't read the full Read-Me file to give you any further info.

No doubt HCC will be interested in your experiences, so please report them here.

Since Rob, couldn't do it, I've done it for him (post the details of the PDF contents that is). A long overdue fix.

.

Improved ELITE updater.. 22 June 2016

.

“...to ensure reliable updating of the Elite using the increasingly wider range of processor types and motherboard chipsets, Win OS, etc. we have introduced a facility into the updater that allows a user to adjust the update data transfer rate from the installer to the Elite to better suit his particular PC.

.

We provide 3 PC “Type” settings, selectable via a drop down menu:

.

/media/tinymce_upload/1a9100ff1b23b140035f7311a9a2edb8.jpg

.

PC Type 1

For use the Slow/older type PCs. … this sets a longer data transfer interval in the updater and better suits older, slower PCs. e.g. Windows XP. Intel Core2 Processors etc? Maybe Older Laptops?

.

PC Type 2

For use “Typical” PCs … this sets a midrange interval in the updater to suit most PCs up to a couple of years old. (2016) i.e. typical office PCs etc. e.g. Windows 7/8. Possibly, Intel I3 type processors.

.

PC Type 3

For use Faster PCs) … this sets a shorter interval in the updater better suited to more modern faster PCs. Windows 7/8/10. Possibly, Intel I5/I7 processors and faster.

.

We suggest you use Type 2 initially and if this takes a long time to complete or it fails, try Type 1 (which maybe better suited to an older PC.) Use Type 3 on a faster machine.

.

Note that if you try too high a Type setting for your machine the update will usually work but it may take a long time to complete, this dependent upon your particular PC. You are also recommended to make a note of the Type best suited to your machine in case of future updates.'

.

It is noted that PC technology advances very quickly.. The PC “types” above relate to the date of release of the “new updater”.. However, the different “types” selectable should suffice for the foreseeable future… i.e. if you can’t get the update to work with one “type” we suggest you try another. If all fails contact Hornby Customer Support.

.

The “new” updater will be applied to all future ELITE updates.

Thanks for that Chris

Being on holiday with skeleton kit has its drawbacks, although I have my spare Elite and ESU decoder rig with me, as well as a Win 10 i7 laptop, that I will setup tomorrow to proof test the new updater.

Apparently 'a long time' can mean as long as an hour, and as before if it progresses too guickly - e.g. Less than 2 minutes - it will usually fail.

At last Win 10 users should be happy bunnies.

I don't think I will risk it on my working set up on a 'just to see if it does it basis'.......no point in tempting fate. Have downloaded the files anyway and stored away, but will wait for 1.43 before putting my toe in the water.

.

I think my Win10 Intel i5 laptop is borderline 'PC type 3', but it still didn't work when I upgraded to 1.42 on the old updater.

I'm still on v1.41 and working on the basis, if it ain't broke ...

I think, judging by the number of problems that have been reported with v1.42, it is staying at v1.41 until something significant is added.

I would like to report that I have successfully updated the firmware on my spare Elite to v1,42 using the new installer on an HP Intel i7 Win 10 laptop.

The update installed at the first attempt.

The normal Elite update connection method was used - i.e. Press STOP button, plug in power, wait then release STOP button, wait then plug in USB cable, wait then run the installer app.

No additional drivers were installed on this brand new Win 10 laptop, the Elite is on COM5 and the new installer was selected to PC Type 3 - the update took about 5 minutes.

Well done Hornby and lets hope this is the end of all those frustrating failed updates seen by people using modern Window OS.

RAF, I may be under a misapprehension that the USB chip set with HP laptops was still a problem with RailMaster?

I'm glad that that the desktop works. Maybe I should get an-all-in-one 23" touch screen to put my grubby finger prints on to change the points and move throttles rather than a small laptop screen?
