debe45
I have an old Midland compound 4-4-0 loco which is great on DC, It is also fine on DCC, although I have only run it for a short time. I am now fully DCC and want to use the Compound but will it be OK as it is or do I need to add a decoder to it. If add a decoder is the answer - can anyone tell me how to get inside the tender? roythegrass
I also await advice! My Hornby DCC Select handbook says an analog loco can be run on DCC - with limitations- but I recall reading somewhere that it's not advisable and not to leave the loco on the track idle for too long. poliss
Add a decoder. The motor can burn out in seconds if used on DCC without one.
2e0dtoeric
This is where the instruction book is wrong - never never use a dc loco on DCC, as it is getting the full voltage of 16v all the time, even when the motor is not turning, and it will very rapidly overheat and burn out. choralc
I'd be very surprised if with a little effort you could hardwire a DCC decoder into this model. Don't have an old one only a recent DCC ready version.

Michael_A
Definitely install a decoder. Can't find a guide for your loco, but this may help: https://www.hornby.com/uk-en/hornby-dcc/decoder-installation-guides/tender-drive-flying-scotsman-decoder-installation/
