DEREK123
Hi you clever boys !!I have just bought a B12 with a dead motor XO? .... I have a spare X03 but this B12 has a black nylon worm fitted wit I think a different drive wheel gear.... Can I remove the brass gear from MY X03 , and simply slide on the black nylon one which comes off reasonably easily ? and use that in the B12.If that all makes sense do I need a special puller for the brass worm removal , or is there another way ?, if so then where can I get it or how do I do it ?....... The loco is well worth restoring .I am what you would call a novice but if it can be done I will have a go !!Thanks in anticipation .Derek
Tony57
HiThe X04 has the Brass Worm The X03 has the Nylon WormYes you can swop between the two as they are basicly the same motor.just different worms. Ideally a worm puller would be the best tool so as not to dammage the brass worm or the motor which can be repaired.. Is the motor dead or has the lead from the wheel pickup broke which can be mistaken for a dead motor? Which B 12 have you got please as it is easier to help giving the correct information like service sheet.
96RAF
In the absence of a proper gear puller you can often get by with a pair of long nosed pliers.place the tapered plier jaws between the pinion and motor frame and use it as a wedge to prise the gear off the shaft.it may be necessary to get it started by tapping the shaft end on a solid surface as you wedge it more.its not ideal and you have to take care not to bend the shaft or graunch the gear. DEREK123
Hi Tony and thanks so much for your reply. The LOCO is an R 150 runnng no 8509 ( LNER ) .... I have service sheet 86 ... is that the right one ?I never knew about XO3/4 identification ... cheers. ( so what is an XO3.5 ? )The actual LOCO and tender are in lovely condfition and the installed non runner XO4 looks as new but I noticed a brush head was missing and really thought no more as I was not in a position to test it out. On proper testing when I got it home ( ie to NEW brushes ) it proved to be very DEAD !!! That was out of the chassis to eliminate pickups.etc...... This motor has no oil pads at all is that right ?I knew I had a good spare motor ( XO? )but didn't realise that the worms were different, ( I.ve never seen a black nylon one before !! ) ........ hence my silly question(s)How should I try to remove the brass worm .... as best I can ?Thanks again.Derek

Tony57
HiJust to help you the B12 Loco you have is a R866. There is also a R866S (smoke unit fitted) There is also a R866 NS (This is with chuff chuff sound unit in the tender and a smoke unit in the loco) The working motor you have got ,is it a single thread or a double thread, service sheet 81(B) says thatthe X04 has both a Brass Twin Thread Worm and a Black Twin Thread Worm for the 40 tooth worm wheel. Do the two threads look the same if so you do not have to change them over.X03 has a single thread worm both in Black and Grey for the 28 tooth worm wheel.(I have learnt something today out of this)
DEREK123
Hi Tony and thanks again.I have learnt something too !! ... thanks for all that model differences info.I tracked down Service Sheet 81( b ) and I am sure that the u/s motor with the BLACK NYLON WORM is single thread and my X04 is not.............in fact the X04 locks up if fitted , as the gears do not match.RAFs suggestion sounds promising .... I will be back !!Thanks.Derek
81F
I once had a similar problem with the original Hornby Hall (same basic chassis). this had a the X04 and brass worm and black gear. When the motoe died I swapped it for an X03 and changed the gear on the axel for a grey one (both recovered from a pannier I think. Thankfully there was no complication with a smoke generator. The one down side was that it was a nightmare getting the quartering right (my first time) but I suspected that this was out as the loco kept binding which had lead to the burn out. Ruffnut Thorston
X.04 Motors only have the Brass WORM. The X.04 GEAR WHEEL on the driving axle can be the original Brass gear, or the Black plastic gear. X.03 motors only have the Black Plastic WORM. The X.03 GEAR WHEEL on the axle is Silver Grey, (or some other colours, but not black!) The X.03 has no olil pads, and a slightly shorter armature shaft, that the worm fits onto.... To confuse matters, there was a 1950s X.03 motor, that pre-dated the X.04....but this has the Brass worm! 😉

Ruffnut Thorston
I ran out of time last time.... There is/ was a worm removal tool (not a Tri-ang Original, but it does work, I have one!) available via an Ebay seller...(but doesn't seem to have any listed now...) He also has various motor parts (including the oil pads and mounting bracket for the front pad) and motors currently for sale. John050272 CTS-THE-HORNBY-TRIANG-SPARES-SHOP It may be worth asking if he can still get the various tools for Tri-ang stock he had for sale....useful! 😉
