Tri-ang/Hornby 0-6-0 Jinty Wheel Washers

Hi guys,

Help (please)! I have a 1972 Tri-ang/Hornby 0-6-0 Jinty which I am currently restoring to running condition. Each pickup wheel has a felt washer to push it on to the pick ups unfortunately these have simply rotted away. I have tried using cardboard washers but this slows the motor and they tend to wear out really quickly, so this isn't a good solution. Does anybody know if these felt washers are available to buy and from where?

Many thanks

The material is "fibre", so fibre washers.

These were sometimes used to help insulate the pick-up wheels from the chassis, which is "live" with the other polarity!

If the pick-up wheels have good bushes, there was usually enough plastic to keep the wheels away from the chassis, but sometimes the clearance can be tight, hence the fibre washers.

The parts people, Peter's Spares, etc. may be able to help....as may some Ebay sellers...

Other than that, fibre washers are uesd in a lot of applications...

Thin plastic washers could be used....

OR insulating tape applied to the chassis side, with the axles passing thorough should work.

Shim fibre washers on all axles suggest the loco has been bodged at some time, it was not unknown for a single fibre washer to be fitted to a loco with wear and indeed some as new production 0-6-0's did have them on the back axle on the picukup side to increase insulation clearances.

The shim fibre washer isn't available as a spare but it is possible with some scouting around to find something usable. There should be something usable in this link.   http://www.silverlinetools.com/en-GB/Products/Hardware%20and%20Fixings/Mini%20Packs/797967

The plastic wheel bush S.5065 normally have a collar on the back which is usually sufficient to provide insulation, check the the backs of the wheel bushes for wear, replacement bushes are still available from the likes of Peter's Spares.
