Engine revving, not moving

Hi, I bought my son a Thomas Hornby set for Christmas, along with a few track extension packs, and after a few days of fun, the engine now just seems to rev (whatever speed) and barely moves. He'll move a few centimetres with a push, and then just go back to revving. Any advice is gratefully recceived on how to get him moving again!

Are the wheels turning, but the train doesn't move

or is the motor whizzing, but the wheels don't turn.

If the second - either the gear has come off the motor shaft, or the motor has been dislodged from it's seating.

If the first, does the engine move on it's own?

If it does, then one or more of the wheels on the trucks are jammed.

Are you running Thomas on the carpet, or on a clean hard surface (under the track!)

If it is nothing obvious (fluff) take the whole lot back to where you bought it, for repair or replacement.

If on the carpet, you have probably got carpet fluff and muck in the mechanism.

Hi there, the the wheels aren't turning (only perhaps a rotation or two to start before just revving). It's running on track pinned to MDF so I'm pretty sure it's not fluff. I shall try looking at the motor shaft and report back. Many thanks
