96RAF
Its a David Shepherd painting called appropriately enough Black Fives. http://www.railart.co.uk/gallery/shepherd.shtml http://www.davidshepherd.com/davidshepherd-blackfive.html still of no help with the number though. walkingthedog
If you read the text about the painting which is at Stoke on Trent, he explains about the grubby state of the Black 5 at the end if its life and how the numbers were usually unreckognisable. 96RAF
I suppose if you could access the Stoke records for thedates around the time of the painting you would get a band of likely numbers. Or as I have just thought go onto the Black 5 web site (bound to be one) and check the listing for those chopped at Stoke at that tiime.Rob
Postman Prat
A perfect picture of how things were at the end of steam. There is nothing to suggest that the loco is withdrawn, or even withdrawal is iminent. The loco is in steam and is on the 'coal road' suggesting further work. I agree that the loco is in an appaling state but that could be said about most steam locos at that time.
walkingthedog
The painting is called Black Five Country which to me means they are still going strong.
