Location of Railmaster backups

Recommended Posts

The back up files, shown as xxxxxxx.bak are stored in the RailMaster folder.  This can be located in your Program files (or Program Files (x86)) folder in your computer, usually your C Drive.

Take great care with this folder if you are not familiar with it's use, although the .bak files within RailMaster will re-create themselves the next time you close down.

If you click on the '?' icon at the top of your RM screen it will bring up a small box with your Software Registration numbers and other icons on it.

Click on the floppy disc icon and you will see where the files are saved.

You can then change the drive and directory to an external drive, USB drive or similar. Backup onto the new location then use filemaster, locate the folder and you will see which files are backed up.

It is a good idea to save to an external drive in case your main drive ever fails.

Just be aware that the description that PJ has given above is only applicable if you have RailMaster ProPack. The 'standard' edition of RailMaster still creates .bak files, but only for manual access in the manner RDS has described.

.

For further information. If you ever get RailMaster 'hanging' during shut down when the backing up message is shown. Then just search out and delete all the files that end in .bak in the railmaster program folder. The 'hanging' of railmaster occurs when one or other of these .bak files has become corrupted. Deleting them is not an issue as the next time you close down RailMaster fresh clean .bak files will be created.

.

If when using 'Windows Explorer' you can't see the three letter .bak file extension. Then open 'Folder Options' in the Windows 'Control Panel', go to the 'View' tab and un-tick the box marked "Hide extensions for known file types".

.

The .bak files contain copies of amongst other things. Backups of your 'loco roster', all your 'track plans' plus any programs you might have created. In fact anything that contains data that is created as a result of your personal specific operational options.

Have explored this further, and key backup files are the ones starting resource in the railmaster folder. In particular there is an Access database resource.mdb which holds specific info, so these files need to be copied out elsewhere for security.
