DCC Loco Humming

Too little information to make any assessment of what could be wrong.

What is the controller, which points motors, which accessory decoders, which locos and how are they addressed for a start.

Are the locos fitted with a decoder as humming suggests they are DC locos without decoders.

Just for the elimination of any possible doubt.

.

Does the box the loco came in have "DCC Ready" printed on it. Or does it have either "DCC Fitted" or "DCC on-board" printed on it?

.

If it has "DCC Ready" printed on the box, then it does not have a DCC decoder fitted inside the loco. Well at least not by the Hornby factory, although one could have been fitted by the retailer.

.

As others have asked......what are the product R numbers of your kit. Only then, can we make an informed assessment of your issue.

Then as sold new it does not have a DCC decoder inside. Hence the humming noise.  Don't use this on DCC until a decoder had been fitted.  Unless one had been fitted by someone else.

DCC Ready means for use on conventional DC (Analogue) power, but can be converted to DCC by fitting a suitable decoder into the on board socket after removing the DC operation blanking plug.

In that case, unless someone has fitted an after market decoder, your loco is effectively a DC analogue locomotive. A "DCC Ready loco" will not run on DCC until it is fitted with a decoder.

.

This is most likely why it is humming**. Do not leave it on the track with the power on. It may already be too late, DCC track voltages, if left connected to a DCC Ready loco will eventually burn out the motor.

.

Note** DCC is a form of AC. A 'DCC Ready' loco is for all intents and purposes an analogue DC loco that is ready to accept a DCC decoder being fitted to it. Putting a DC motor on an AC power source explains the humming. If it stops humming, then the motor has probably burnt out. Do not use it with your DCC controller until you have fitted a DCC decoder.
