Abbotsbury
Just curious . ... are points ever situated between station platforms (never seen this, they always seem to be situated outside. Working with a small layout!!
walkingthedog
They might be somewhere, but if you think about it, as the loco crosses points the front or back will overhang and will hit the platform. Of course they do have points at the end of the track in a terminus station so the loco can run round the train, maybe they have extra spacing for this, never really noticed. Abbotsbury
Yes .... hmm, will have to extend the track even more!! Seems difficult working with ovals and obtaining some sense of realism without having very long straights (but good to see a good straight length of track and the movement of the train!). Sultan
I have asection of track on my layout that has a PECO medium radius point (914mm radius) against a platform edge and I have no proiblems with the locos or coaches hitting the platform. I have set the platform face out using the PECO SL-36 6ft way gauge http://bit.ly/2lWr9aP.
Abbotsbury
Many thanks Sultan! I will explore with the points, tried variations using curved points but just getting a truly smooth arch and so resorting to introducing point crossover on straight lengths but without placing these on platform stretch then having to extend the length of track (trying to keep overall size down to one standard length and width of plywood (and opposite straight track section would be behind scenic board. Really want to keep points on view!

Ruffnut Thorston
As said above, there is a problem on Model Railways with the sharp (standard points are Radius 2) curves involved. This can mean that a point alongside a platform can be difficult. On Ffrwd Locks, I had to trim the overhang on the platform (Home built) a bit to clear the overhang on a loco running-round its train. On the prototype, there are many locations with points alongside platforms...Chester General is one, where it is possible for two trains to arrive and depart from the one platform, using the centre (non-platform) roads and the mid-platform crossovers... walkingthedog
Must admit I was thinking more about model railways when I referred to hitting the platform. It really depends on what locos you are running. A small tank engine will not have the same problems as a 4-6-0 or large diesel. Trial and error is the best solution. Ruffnut Thorston
The outside cylinders on some locos stick out and cause problems...on real railways as well as models... 😉 The GWR had some locos that were "banned" from other lines... The "Broad Gauge Legacy" gave the GWR a bit more room in the Loading Gauge o some of its routes...
Abbotsbury
Many, many thanks for all your replies and comments, really appreciated and it is so good to belong to this forum. I am running and expect to run small GWR tank locos so might get away with the points actually running within the platform territory, must just experiment anyway. So enjoying getting involved with model railways again, been a long, long time .. but loving all the planning, the design aspects - and this is just the track!! 81F
Several of my layouts had points against platforms which could have the same problem s you were worried about. My solution was twofold, I alwas used PECO streamline points which have a shallow diverging angle than setrack or Hornby ones. Also when positioning the platform I always used the loco with the largest overhang I had. Originally this was the hornby Hall but I think the King has the most from a GWR perspective. 81F
@Sarahagain, Very nice layout. Is the coach one of the old Grafar OO suburban coaches? Also can you tell me whoes paint you use for the GWR light and dark stone as I am having trouble sourcing it at the moment.
LCDR
Points in the platform area was common, but it brought probems of overhang as mentioned earlier . It was usual to carve away a bit of the coping stones at the edge where the overhang occured which increased the stepping distance for passengers, something that is frowned upon by the MoT. London Victoria and Leeds City are two big stations where points occur in the platform, and there are dozens of others. From a model railway perspective the biggest problem will be the operating switch especially with the train set type points that have a bulky plinth for the switch and motor. You can cut away the platform wall but then the switch will be underneath the platform making it difficult to operate.

Yes, the coaches are the Grafar O "Suburbans"... The GWR Light and Dark stone woukd be by Railmatch and/ or Precision Paints....I have had jars/ tins from both sources. (The station was mostly painted around 2008-2009 I think! 😉 ) There has been some debate on which brand is most "correct"..... Railmatch...(Scroll down a bit on this page...) http://www.howesmodels.co.uk/category/Pre-Nationalisation%20shades%20-%20enamel Precision Paints... walkingthedog
You might find that streamline/express points would be better, they are less of an angle.
