LCDR Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 Can I put in a request for the air smoothed Merchant Navy loco in BR 1949 blue livery, next year please. (But PLEASE not 35030 because I already have one in that livery built from a kit)
Ruffnut Thorston Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 It would be a Good Idea.... Tri-ang Hornby liked Blue Locos....it seems they sold well! The Blue B12 is a case in point....very popular (Used) but the real ones were not painted Blue!
Tony57 Posted March 19, 2017 Posted March 19, 2017 HiI would buy a Blue Liveried one also a SR Black with Sunshine Yellow lettering version, preferably 35011 or 21C11 General Steam Navigation.
LCDR Posted March 20, 2017 Author Posted March 20, 2017 Then there was 35024 painted blue but with three red horizintal stripes in the same position as the yellow stripes on a SR Malachite green one. Didn't last long like that and was soon repainted in standard blue with two black & white stripes instead. I saw my only blue Merchant Navy at Rye Lane Peckham passing above the road through Peckham Rye station. I was in my push-chair at the time, but I can remember being hugely impressed. Bulleids did receive some other liveries that Hornby hasn't tried yet. A few light Pacifics were painted in Apple Green in 1948 with mixed traffic style lining to work with the plum & spilt milk painted Maunsell carriages (Plum being considerably darker (almost chocolate) than the crimson lake later adopted for BR standard red & cream carriages. A few other classes were painted in apple green, including Lord Nelsons, Castles, Jubilees and Patriots. Needless to say these experiments only lasted a couple of years.
Postman Prat Posted March 20, 2017 Posted March 20, 2017 Hi LC&DR Re the Merchant with the red stripes. The only colour photo I've seen of this loco appears to show the loco in a slightly different shade of blue to that carried by the black/white lined locos. Do you know if it was different or is it a case of the 'strong' red having a different effect on the blue to that of black/white?
LCDR Posted March 21, 2017 Author Posted March 21, 2017 The three published resources I have seem to suggest that the blue was the same but only the lining was changed. The colour photograph I have seen is generally dark all over which may give a false impression, especially as the red lining is also very dark.
Ruffnut Thorston Posted March 21, 2017 Posted March 21, 2017 There was an "experimental blue" that was more of a Purple I believe.... Certainly used on a Hornby A4 I think....
LCDR Posted March 24, 2017 Author Posted March 24, 2017 I don't believe the 'purple' was used on SR locos. I have seen pictures of it applied to A3 & A4s but no others so it seems it was something the Eastern Region did. Maybe a bad paint mix?
