NinthPlanet
Hi all,.My Hornby R2848 'Tintagel Castle' sounds and acts none-too-great. At low speeds she stutters and makes a deep, low-pitch, rumbling noise - particularly when running forwards. I fitted her with a Hornby R8249 DCC Decoder three weeks ago, but the problem was happening before that. I thought it might be because she hadn't been run that often until recently, but I think the issue is with the motor..Can anyone advise me on the best course of action? I'm a little wary of separating loco and tender due to the delicate wires. Many thanks in advance. 😀
Howbi
9th planet..........you need to refer to service sheet hss346c.......sounds like you have a motor or gears problem, should be easy to dismantle for inspection...........get one of these extractors to safely remove the wiring plug to the tender, essential for the toolkit.........HB/media/tinymce_upload/fdf3d5b692d0b548ea069bec4de552f2.jpg
2e0dtoeric
You don't say how old your 'tintagel' is.If it has been in a box for a good while, it may need a very good clean and lube of the mechanism, wheels, and pick-ups.As it was doing this BEFORE you changed it to DCC, it is not the decoder, but the loco itself. It has been said many times before, if you intend converting a loco, make sure it runs well on dc FIRST!You are now running her with a DCC controller, aren't you, and not an old analogue (dc) one, which could use a pulsed power control system - hence the rumbling or buzzing at low speeds. What controller are you using? I'll get in contact with Hornby to get one of those extractors. 😀
NinthPlanet
You don't say how old your 'tintagel' is..She was a pre-order that I received in March 2011..If it has been in a box for a good while, it may need a very good clean and lube of the mechanism, wheels, and pick-ups..Thanks for the advice. I've just lubricated the areas that the O&M manual suggests I lubricate. I'll report back to see if anything has improved..As it was doing this BEFORE you changed it to DCC, it is not the decoder, but the loco itself. It has been said many times before, if you intend converting a loco, make sure it runs well on dc FIRST!You are now running her with a DCC controller, aren't you, and not an old analogue (dc) one, which could use a pulsed power control system - hence the rumbling or buzzing at low speeds. What controller are you using?.My DCC controller is a Hornby eLink. The DC controller I used her on before installing the decoder is a Hornby R965, which I bought in 2009. Is the R965 a pulsed DC controller?
