I have a hornby select and need to do a loco decoder reset to manu settings ( write 8 to CV 8 ) 

how do you do it?

Unfortunately the Select does not support a general CV writing feature. It can write to a limited number of CV controlled configuration elements such as, for example, the DCC Address, Acceleration and Deceleration, but this is through a dedicated menu driven interface sub-system. It does not however have any capability to write to other CVs such as CV8.

Note that the 'reset option' in the 'Select Menu' is a factory reset for the Select controller itself and not the factory reset of an external decoder as one would find in a loco.

PS - You are correct in that to reset a decoder you need to write value 8 to CV8. There is no other way or workaround.
