Changing address on R8101 tts decoder

I have just installed a R8101 TTS sound decoder and tried to change the address from default 3 to 31 using Hornby Select controller (on test track) but the light flashes 7 times and remains at 3. This is the method I have used for all of my other locos and all worked fine. Is there something different with the TTS decoders?

There are quite a few posts about problems with programming and running with TTS decoders, not just on this forum but a variety of others as well.  Sometimes, it appears, turning the loco round on the programming track or running track can make them program or run !  Various makes and models of controllers and also different versions of the same model are affected.   Some versions apparently work OK, some don't!!!  Hopefully, Hornby are trying to sort out what's going on.

PS it may just be the latest TTS decoders that show problems.  Maybe a minor firmware change causing it.
