I've been collecting analogue rally cars for  a couple of years now and I was wondering if anyone knew some of the history of rally slot cars over the years. My collection is mainly of cars racing in the WRC from 1998 to about 2004 partly because there is an abundance of models available second hand across Scalextric, SCX, Autoart, Carrera and Ninco, plus it was a fine era for the sport (Makinen, McRae, Burns, etc) . There are of course some lovely nostalgic original Scalextric models pre mid 90s (Subaru 555s, Celicas, Quatros and the like) and some very detailed recent reproductions of cars from the 70s and 80s (Ford Escorts, Lancias and Metros) excellent to drive and great to look at. But aside from a couple of Ford Focuses, the last hurrah of the Subarus and a smattering of VW Polos there seems to be a distinct shortage of rally models from the past 10 or so years.

Did the tricky patch the WRC itself went through during the years dominated by Citroen/Loeb affect popularity? Added to this did the more recent WRC branded 1:43 product tie up the licenses to produce the latest cars? Or is point-to-point rallying even less relevant now that digital has come along?

I would have thought Rallycross would be ideally suited to a digital environment. Aside from some smaller sets there doesn't seem to be much of that around either.

Any thoughts?

David
