Elementary tender wiring

I have some older Coronation Class tender drive locos which I am wanting to upgrade and convert to DCC. I have a new Henry tender chasis and a new 5 pole motor. I have read the Hornby download decoder installation for James (Thomas the Tank) and it seems

similar/same motor and chasis. My first peoblem is that the instructions say there are 3 black wires connected to each side of the capacitor; all wires are loose but I guess the two from lefthand wheel pickups should be joined and the two righthand wheel pickups

should be joined to the other side. But which of the two wires (one red and one black) coming from the tender coupling pin go with the lefthand wires and which with the righthand wires? Is the tender coupling picking up power from the loco and if so what is

its purpose when there are two pickups each side of the tender? If I can understand the above I may have more questions!
