walkingthedog
Think they're snow ploughs. Depends on the weather!

NormyTerrier
Hi Pete007,Whenever I've seen the 153s in shops the one in Regional Railways livery never seems to have the ploughs on the front. I've got two Northern Rail ones and both came with ploughs, however this particular unit might not have had them fitted. This image shows it without them fitted: http://www.allsortsmodelshop.co.uk/WebRoot/BT2/Shops/BT3935/4BED/9E0C/11FB/3770/24D7/0A0A/33E9/417C/r2759.jpg Some of the Hornby images aren't 100% accurate and are usually just 'illustrating' the model. When the new Grand Central power cars were advertised, they were done so using a Photoshopped image of the old power, which also had no front buffers! bocaj
I don't think they are just you'sed for snow plows evan though that's their name. They are used to move things of the line saftley without stopping the train I think.Jacob
walkingthedog
Don't think so Jacob. Imagine if the 'thing' got caught under the plough and got pushed along the line, the damage could be considerable to train and track.

Postman Prat
Hi WTD,I think Jacob is getting confused between a Snowplough and a CowCatcher!!walkingthedog said:Don't think so Jacob. Riddles
NormyTerrier is quite correct. 153303/52303 was NOT fitted with miniature snowploughs at the time it carried Regional Railways livery although I do not know the present situation. Personally, I think it looks better with them fitted so I bought a pair from East Kent Models and retrofitted them.Riddles
Tamworth Stuart
As an ex railway employee, I can confirm what everyone said. They are not just snowploughs but designed to push large items off the track to prevent damage to the trains. Cows mainly.

The reason why the Regional Railways versions are not fitted with snow ploughs is that when they were first introduced they were not fitted with snow PLOUGHS. JLBA
Hi all, DMU stands for Diesel Multiple Unit. A class 153 is a single car, not multiple, so therefor its simply a Class 153, or perhaps a Class 153 Unit!!! I suppose if 2 are couple together they still wouldnt be a DMU, but 2, or a pair of Class 153s!!!

When delivered to Britiah Rail in Regional Railway days they were not fitted with snow ploughs. It was only later they were fitted with snow PLOUGHS

Beesfan
Are there any more 153s coming? I'd love to see a FGW blue one or, better still, a Looe Valley Explorer or St Ives Bay Line liveried 153 from the late Wessex Trains era.
