Dcc loco

Hi

our layout is powered by hm clipper controllers, not very sophisticated but we like it.

if I buy a loco which already has a dcc chip fitted do I need to remove it first before running on analogue track?

No. DCC loco run perfectly on a DC layout as long as DC running hasn't been turned off, can't think of the correct word, on the decoder. Almost all new DCC locos will run.

Be careful, I found that using my H & M Duette it blew up a loco with a Bachmann DCC decoder in it. I think the issue was that as the controller was old it was using unfiltered DC (on DC the loco doesn't care it filters it). I suspect the peaks of voltage were too much for the ectronics, if it it a relatively modern controller it should be smoothed so not much of an issue, it wasn't with my newer controller. Must admit from experience I would change it back to DC to be safe.

Personally I would agree with Colin, the Clipper output if viewed on a scope would be a very rough noisy DC, compared to modern DC controller technology. There are many who use old analogue controllers on DCC models and state no issues, but is it worth the risk.....

I prefer to purchase a DCC locomotive if there's a choice for similar price - used - but will always remove the chip and fit a blanking plate.

 

This permits the option of easily 'upgrading' to DCC in the future.
