Noisy ringfield motor.

I am sure there must be a post somewhere on this forum, but I cannot find it with the search. Does anyone have any ideas how I cure a noisy ringfield motor, it whines a lot? I have tried grease, that seems to make it worse, do I need to renew the gears?

A few drops of 3 in 1 oil, on the shaft on either side, where it goes into the ringfield casing.

3 in 1 is not recommended for model locos. Doesn't like plastic.

And "a few drops" of oil would be too much!  The old maxim 'If you can see it, you have put too much on' holds good where oiling is concerned.  A very small drop of model oil in to each motor shaft bearing, particularly behind the metal spur gear on the shaft, should be plenty.

I believe that petroleum jelly, or Vaseline, was recommended for the 'bearing' in the plastic faceplate of the Ringfield motor, as oil can sleep into the motor, and onto the commutator...not good for the motor brushes...

 

Vaseline type stuff stays mainly in place...

I use silicon grease on the gears. So what oil do people recommend? On the web it says silicon is best for plastic, so is a silicon spray OK?

I would buy an oil from a model railway retailer.

I wouldn't use a spray, they're ok for large areas but for models a more precise, controllable applicator is best.

 

A sewing needle dipped into a small pot of oil works for me.  I use the Peco Electrolube.  If I want a bit more oil I use a small paper clip instead of the needle.

Re. sexist/ sewing machine. I use all kinds of power tools, drive a car, and in the past have driven many thousands of miles in buses, but there is no way in the world that Mrs. Tenpointfive would let me anywhere near her sewing machine!
